With this position, it saw a continuation of my Laboratory Supervisor role whilst also aligning to cover all the other aspects of my full scope of work. My duties were to continue looking after the daily operations from the National Contracting Lab, that offered UKAS testing on routine site samples/cores. I also managed the technical aspects of the Sitebatch business looking after the testing and compliance on numerous schemes which were successful. This was also in addition of helping run & manage technical staff, contracts & equipment alongside the Area Technical Manager.

Moving along from my brief time as a Senior Technician, and playing a part in helping the team retain another year of a great UKAS accreditation, I was offered my first Supervisor role. In this position it see’s me managing the Laboratory testing & operations from the National Contracting Laboratory aswell as working closely with the Technical Supervisor delivering projects from a technical stance in the North & Midlands regions. From early 2023 I began to look after the Technical aspects of HBM (CBGM, RCC) & CRBM (Foamix) products with SiteBatch Technologies, delivering schemes from a Technical stance nationally. This was in addition to running the Laboratory & managing several other surfacing schemes from a Technical stance.

Further on from setting up the National Contracting Laboratory and successfully training a Kickstart apprentice, who was offered a full time position after 6 months, I was given a promotion to a Senior role. During this time I progressed to work closer with the Technical Supervisor, in delivering the full quality control experience to our clients from end to end. This saw me begin to look after various projects from a technical standpoint alongside working in & managing laboratory tasks. Further in this period I moved towards looking at HBM testing aswell as asphalt, giving myself a broader knowledge of the road construction world having touched on HBM at intervals during my other technical roles. Schemes involving CBGM & Foamix were highlights in those areas.

After gaining nearly 4 years experience working for a sub-contractor, I was offered a position on board for Aggregate Industries. After working closely already with their technical team as a sub, I gained a very good understanding of what they wanted to achieve going forward. My role continued asphalt testing for contracting, on sites throughout the UK on major trunk roads and motorways, all UKAS accredited. Sites included renewing existing carriageways to full new build schemes. Test procedures including Laying Records, In-situ Densities, Texture Depths, Rolling Straight Edge and other asphalt tests depending on what is required by the clients and itp’s. During this period, I also took the lead on all the coring works for our contracting sites, assisting the Technical Supervisor in the quality control between the North & Midlands regions. I also branched out to Laboratory testing in the Research & Development house, testing cores taken from our contracting sites and carrying out procedures to gain results for clients. These tests all UKAS accredited included Bulk Densities & Air Voids, Max Density, Refusal Density & Refusal Voids.I then played the main part of setting up the National Contracting Laboratory in January 2021 (UKAS accredited), which tests asphalt cores & samples from our National sites around the UK.

This role saw the start of my career in asphalt testing, working for this firm mainly as a sub-contractor to Aggregate Industries. The work consisted of asphalt site testing on newly laid & existing road surfaces, working on major UK motorways & trunk roads. Ranging from new build sites to renewing existing carriageways. Carrying out [UKAS accredited] Laying Records, In-situ Densities, Texture Depths, Rolling Straight Edge & other asphalt site tests as required by the clients.

In this role, I worked closely with the owner/operator of the business as an assistant gardener provding gardening services throughout the Kirklees, West Yorkshire area. Tasks starting from general maintenance on existing garden layouts to full transformations and creating new garden spaces for customers.
