About Mark Gardett, Phd

I am passionate about two things: problem solving and public service.Give me a big, important problem to solve, and I'm in my zone. Better yet is the opportunity to bring people together to collaborate on solving it. Whether it's working with authors to hone their big ideas into the linear structure of a book or crafting the five-year strategic plan for a nonprofit, I excel at bridging the big picture and the tactical action needed to achieve it. My teaching background makes me a coaching-focused leader, most interested in providing my teams with what they need to be successful. And my experience as a researcher has given me the tools to effectively track, measure, and improve the work we're doing.Public service is in my DNA. After spending the first part of my career teaching, I transitioned into nonprofit work. I've done almost every kind of work that nonprofits do: research, communications, patient advocacy, community outreach, industry engagement, fundraising, and program design and evaluation. In three of my last four nonprofit roles, I was asked to participate in crafting the organization's strategic plan.I believe strongly in evidence-based practice, community engagement (nothing about us without us!), and finding ways to collaborate across differences. My proudest achievements have involved convening unlikely partnerships--academic researchers, public policy makers, community advocates, corporate partners, public safety agencies, and clinicians, among others--to find ways forward that serve all the stakeholders. To some people, I can seem like a bit of a paradox: a writing teacher who has published clinical and public health research. An English major who loves data and program evaluation. I like to think of myself as a connector, linking the human and the technical to craft solutions that both solve a problem and serve the needs of those affected by it.In short, I bring an evidence-driven, practical approach to the complex, very human issues that are crying out to be solved in our time.
