About Mark Longhurst

As an accomplished and knowledgeable aviation professional with over two decades of experience, I have had the privilege of contributing to the growth and evolution of the industry. I am now open to a new opportunity in the aviation/aerospace sector where I can use my expertise handling aircraft performance (flight) data technologies. My passion for delivering exceptional customer service and fastidious approach to business has led me to specialise in flight planning and route optimisation, ensuring the most appropriate flight path, aircraft type and amount of fuel is selected to maintain safety, regulatory and environmental objectives. In my current role as Customer Applications Lead at SITA for Aircraft, I am proud to have contributed the success and development of SITA's AIRCOM FlightPlanner system, a mission-critical flight planning, optimisation and performance software application.Through my work, I have helped airlines improve their operational efficiency, predictability and safety, negating risk, saving fuel, reducing emissions, estimating flight times, and improving the overall passenger experience. All of which have undoubtedly contributed to the post-pandemic recovery and environmental goals to reduce CO2 emissions and thus make aviation ‘ecologically acceptable’.I take pride in my ability to manage customer services and operations within the flight operations division. My technical leadership, product development, and data analysis skills have enabled me to deliver end-to-end service delivery, product ownership and effective team leadership in a fast-paced, multicultural setting.I am able to think ‘outside the box’, not just when problem solving but also when developing an idea. This has allowed me to take the lead for continuous improvement projects to enhance features/fix bugs or meet regulatory updates. My strong development oversight and training skills ensure that systems are always at peak performance, and my customer-centric approach has earned positive feedback from airlines worldwide.I enjoy communicating with a range of professionals ranging from Operations Clerks to Members of the Board, covering a highly technical subject where English is often not the first language. I also believe in doing everything as best as you possibly can, executing tasks for people in the way that I would expect them to be done for me, and aiming to always offer a value-added service.

Flight Efficiencies Specialist

Current
Apr 2024 - Present

Flight Planning Consultant

I was asked if I could take some time to assist the Product Development Team at SITA FOR AIRCRAFT in understanding some issues they were having in their pursuit of a potential new product called OptiDispatch. This was essentially an opportunity to use my flight planning experience to help them interpret errors being generated and understand how they might negate the same.

Flight Planning And Route Optimisation Lead | Customer Applications Sme For Aircom® Flightplanner

London, England, United Kingdom

My division of the SITA group has, for better or worse, been in almost perpetual change during my employment so the need to adapt & be open minded has been paramount. As a result, I have had a multifaceted career, having rapidly progressed from Analyst to Senior Analyst & into my current role as Customer Applications Lead.I manage a diverse customer portfolio of 100+ airlines, including national carriers, budget airlines, & outsize cargo, with a fleet of 2000+ aircraft, ranging from Learjets to the mammoth AN-225. As a team leader, I have overseen the generation of ~14,000 optimised flight plans per day based on a complex analysis of aircraft performance, weather data, & route validation, combined with air traffic management routing requirements. In addition to core service & product ownership, I assumed responsibility for COTAMs, Navigation, & Fuel Price functions which further optimised flight plan calculations, resulting in greater efficiency & accuracy.Despite working a hybrid-model, I harmonised ways of working within & between teams, removing "dark art" perception & creating a culture of collaboration & education resulting in improved performance & employee satisfaction. This involved establishing data management processes & controls, formalising the department's technical competency & enabling rapid response to unexpected occurrences across the globe & around the clock.I have also travelled extensively to train customers on the product & use of the support system and was chosen to assist two African carriers in achieving authorisation for extended-range operations over 180 minutes on Airbus A330/340/350 aircraft, resulting in fuel & time savings through shorter, more direct routes. My experience in creating processes & procedures, managing the software development lifecycle & facilitating FAT/UAT has enabled me to introduce rigor & effectively oversee critical IT software & operating system improvements - much to the delight of customers.

Jun 2000 - Jun 2023

Flight Dispatcher

London Heathrow Airport, England, United Kingdom

I started my aviation career as Flight Dispatch / Load Control Airside Agent responsible for co-ordination of all activities involved in the turn-around of aircraft (SAAB 2000, Boeing 737, Airbus Family A319 to A340, McDonnell Douglas MD11) at Terminal 2 London Heathrow.
