About Mark Wolfe

I have been all over the world creating and guiding projects that entertained, educated, and made millions of people laugh or cry…Occasionally the way we intended 😉🙄🤮I’m a CEO Movie & TV producer Non-profit Board member Reading Rainbow co-founder senior studio exec writer and director Chief Creative Officer start-up entrepreneur and lover of storytelling. 😎In 2010, my business partner, LeVar Burton, and I formed a children's media start up, RRKIDZ. We raised money & acquired rights to Reading Rainbow. We built a company I ran as CEO, & grew to 20+ employees. In 2012 we debuted Reading Rainbow to bring books and world exploring videos to the digital generation. In 2014 I captained the most-backed Kickstarter campaign ever, raising $6.4M for our cause to bring Reading Rainbow to”Every Child, Everywhere”. 🌈🧒👦 Joe and Jill Biden and Michele Obama all invited me to write and direct them in multiple projects. The whole White House experience was beyond surreal. 😱I turned over the reigns of the company to others, retired and during the pandemic got my master's degree, a bucket list item. I joined several Non-profit boards specifically in the disability and education (literacy) spaces. One Board I am currently president of oversees the coordination of the vast $15B annual State of California Dept of Developmental Disabilities Services, where we serve 1% of Cali’s residents with Autism, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury’s and more. 🎗📚♿️Before all those adventures, I managed $1B of movie projects in my career as a Movie Producer or Studio Executive on over 100 films including: 🎬The Way Back (Peter Weir)Terminator 3 and 4 K-19: The Widowmaker (Harrison Ford/Liam Neeson)Kinsey (Liam Neeson)I Heart Huckabees Fargo Four Weddings and a FuneralTaken In Broad Daylight (One of Lifetime’s most watched films)ElizabethThe Big LebowskiReach For Me (A serious look at how the end of life can be celebrated)Dead Man Walking What Dreams May Come Mr Bean The Usual Suspects (I knew who Kaiser Sosse was before you!)Barb Wire (sorry) I am married to my high school prom date & have two great kids. I live in and love being in LA. 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦🕶

Global, equitable literacy for everyone through technology. Cause if you don't read at grade level by the 4th grade, you stand a 50% chance of not graduating High School. Think about it.
  • Reading Rainbow
    Co-Founder/Ceo Rrkkidz (Reading Rainbow)
    Reading Rainbow Nov 2011 - Nov 2017
    Burbank, Ca
What a great & painful journey building a startup from scratch is. LeVar Burton & I were fortunate to gain financing, wisdom, and guidance from Raymonds' Capital, the Kauffman Foundation, and others for our strange idea to develop a subscription service (Apple's first ever) for kid's education that married reading with video field trips on mobile devices. We built a team of 20+ exceptional people and helped kids of the digital generation become excited to read and explore. Being a CEO is one of the greatest and most challenging jobs in the world. It combines little sleep, worry, plenty of missteps, and hard work with excitement, a great feeling of accomplisgment and is most rewarding experience ever. Millions of books read by kids, millions of hours of videos watched. I learned that I could be an apparently successful entrepreneur & CEO MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Wearing the simultaneous hat as Chief Creative Officer, I wrote, directed and exec produced over 200 RR episodes, captained our record-breaking Kickstarter campaign and worked extensively with the White House. The purple puffy bags under my eyes were well worth seeing kids learn to love reading and explore their world. It was a true honor to write for & direct the First Lady Michelle Obama, Joe & Dr. Biden and the Sec'y of Education. We brought our audience of children to Israel and Panama, New York & Washington and most places in between. All this while being a CEO focused on bottom lines, developing products, being a spreadsheet power user, speaking everywhere and of course, becoming an expert beggar for funding. All in all, would I do it again? Yup.
  • Organic Movies
    Owner/Producer
    Organic Movies Jul 2004 - Jan 2011
My own production and consulting company. I consulted for many companies and films including the $200M+ Terminator 4, and Peter Weir's $35m indy film The Way Back. I filmed in India, Morocco, the Sahara Desert and Bulgaria. I also developed and produced some films that explored important subjects to me. Taken In Broad Daylight, which was Lifetime's 3rd highest rated show ever, was the true story of a kidnapped teenager who engineered her own rescue. Reach For Me, which won numerous awards, talked about dignity at the end of life.
  • Qwerty Films
    Head Of Production
    Qwerty Films Jul 2003 - Jul 2006
Produced/exec'd such wonderful films as Kinsey, I Heart Huckabees and The Amateurs. The QWERTY gang was really our gang of former PolyGram execs, including Michael Kuhn and lifelong friend Malcolm Ritchie. This was the 2nd time I worked with Liam Neeson (Kinsey and K-19). We had a lot of laughs. Director Bill Condon is a stellar talent that I greatly admire. Huckabees... Oh David O'Russell and a cast of some of the best actors around. Amateurs starred Jeff Bridges and a nicer or more professional actor in Hollywood you won't find.
  • Intermedia Film
    Producer/Production Head
    Intermedia Film Nov 2000 - Jul 2003
Producer on Terminator 3 and K:19 The Widowmaker.. 3 years, $300 Million dollars. K-19 had me in Moscow, Toronto, and Halifax. I spent a year with Harrison Ford, and if you don't think I counted myself amazed every day on set sitting next to him, you're wrong. Kathryn Bigelow (first woman Best Director) directed. As post was finishing on K-19 (we were in reshoots actually), I started prep on Terminator 3. This was a $214M colossus. Directed by Jonathan Mostow, and starring Ahhhnold. I take pride that I was told by Jonathan that I was the only producer on set who stayed up all night with him for many many night shoots, and that he said in his thank you letter when all was said and done, "Without you we would have been completely sunk". Intermedia was run by Nigel Sinclair at that time and I developed great respect and friendship with Nigel. It was indy film on steroids.
  • Polygram Filmed Entertainment
    Sr Vice-President
Polygram Filmed Entertainment Feb 1993 - Jan 2000
Senior Management team member overseeing all aspects of production and post production of largest independent movie studio in Hollywood. This was the job that took me from kid to Executive. I traveled the world, had offices in LA, London and NYC, made lifelong friends and worked on over 100 films from Four Weddings and a Funeral to Notting Hill, from Elizabeth to Dead Man Walking...Barb Wire to.. ah, forget that one. I was employee #5 in 1993, I was there when we had 400 employees and I turned the lights off when Universal bought us and closed us down Dec 31, 1999. There are days I still miss it.
  • New Line Cinema
    Director Of Something
    New Line Cinema 1991 - 1993
    Beverly Hills
A time I would prefer to forget but an experience to gain from. I loathed working in that environment. However, as with everything, I learned from the experience. A lot of "what not to do" as it related to managing people.
