For nearly twenty years, I've been a part of a team of dedicated people who have studied the use of mental health assessment tools and mental health care models around the world. We know without a doubt that the primary care medical models of mental health care used around the world are broken. Globally, 69 studies between 2016-2021, show the rate of misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis of mental health in primary care averages over 30%. Think about that for a moment. Imagine if the rate of misdiagnosis of cancer, heart disease or diabetes was 30%. Why is this? Well, family doctors around the world get 6-15 minutes with their patients. Most doctors use outdated single-condition assessment tools, or they simply ask a few basic questions and prescribe based on incomplete information.
