I'm a biologist based at the Centre for Ecology and Conservation in Cornwall (University of Exeter) with research interests focussed on animal vision and coloration in nature, especially marine invertebrates, and the impacts of humans on adaptive coloration and behaviour. Research Gate: https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Martin_Stevens5For research, the work in my lab covers sensory and evolutionary ecology and animal behaviour, in particular animal coloration and vision. We also specialises on image analysis and modelling animal vision, including how to study and measure the ways that other animals see the world. This includes both in terms of ecology and evolution and more recently a focus on applied areas of understanding animal vision and coloration, including anthropogenic impacts (light and noise pollution, microplastics climate change). A key area of current work is colour change and camouflage in marine animals.I've published a number of books, including most recently 'Life in Colour' (2021, BBC Books/Penguin), to accompany a new David Attenborough TV series, and a forthcoming book also for a general audience on animal senses ('Secret Worlds', 2021, Oxford University Press), alongside one other general audience book on deception in nature in 2016 (Cheats and Deceits, OUP) and a textbook with OUP: Sensory Ecology, Behaviour, and Evolution. I've often worked with major museums and exhibitions, TV productions, and given a range of public lectures on science.
