Profile bio

About Martin Bourne

I am the Data Science manager at Atom bank having joined as a lead data scientist in 2022. I now manage a team of data scientists spread across various business areas overseeing work undertaken by our mortgages, savings and business lending aligned teams. My team maintains a suite of regular operational reporting as well as predictive, behavioural and financial models. I have developed a wide variety of statistical and machine learning models with intent to use the right tool for the job and focusing on rapid iteration to deliver valuable product to stakeholders. I have worked on model explainability, optimally constrained holdout selection using genetic algorithms, and analysis of model prediction output space in identifying model shift. I graduated with first class honors in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Sheffield, I then completed my PhD, which saw me working with advanced numerical methods for the solution of non-trivial intersection problems between curves and surfaces. Two years of this work was conducted in Singapore, at A*STAR's Institute of High Performance Computing with the remaining two years based in Sheffield. Specialties: Management, Analytics, Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Python, R, Machine Learning, GenAI, VertexAI, Publishing

Listed skills include Science, Physics, Data Analysis, Research, and 71 others.

My PhD focused on methods for the computation of the greatest common divisor (GCD) of two univariate or bivariate polynomials defined in the Bernstein basis. In real world applications the polynomials are defined inexactly, and due to the limitations of floating point computations, an approximate greatest common divisor (AGCD) is instead sought, which is sufficiently close to the (GCD) of the exact problem. This research has practical applications in computing intersections between Bezier curves and surfaces found in computer aided geometric design. I am now skilled in MATLAB having developed a comprehensive codebase and have a good understanding of computational linear algebra, and matrix-based methods. The most interesting aspects of this research related to the difficulties due to binomial terms encountered when dealing with polynomials in Bernstein form. A novel approach to the computation of the GCD of two bivariate polynomials was developed using Sylvester matrix methods. Throughout my study I developed the skills necessary to produce valuable research in a domain of non-trivial problems.

Software Developer

North Shields, North Tyneside, Gb

I replaced a paper-based purchase and plant hire order system with an online tool, which was required to meet the demands of a growing engineering company. By replacing the paper-based system I was able to alter the existing workflow and add new time saving functionality such as email notifications, which were delivered to management when orders were generated. Orders, with unique order reference numbers were also automatically sent to suppliers. The web-based portal was developed using a PHP and MySQL back end with HTML and jQuery frontend. This was a part-time project where system requirements developed over several years and I continued to support throughout my studies.

Junior Software Developer

Nantwich, Cheshire, Gb

Boughey Distribution offered me employment throughout my academic study on a part time basis. I believe this to be testament to my hard work ethic and overall performance. I identified issues with an existing spreadsheet-based work flow, which relied heavily on slow VBA macros. I designed, developed and implemented bespoke, time saving software for purposes of tracking pallets within the company warehouses. This system overcame problems associated with spreadsheets at the time, and consequently gave a faster workflow. This application was developed in Visual Basic with a SQL database backend. I also produced a pallet label printing application which connected to a live SQL database. These labels had previously been produced manually from an excel template, but this was no longer viable as the number of pallets on site had grown rapidly. The tools I developed helped this company transition from an over reliance of general purpose spreadsheets to specialised applications.A more analytical project saw me investigating the cost of delivering an individual customer’s goods by attributing the total cost of a consolidated load across all customers. The tool was then able to highlight the most cost-efficient customers, and guide future operations.
