In 2023, Novartis evolved into a pure-play innovative medicines company with a heavy focus on American markets. I led US external engagement for the corporate brand, R&D, and key therapeutic areas, serving as a spokesperson on a wide range of issues.

Renowned for its ability to drive therapies from discovery to delivery -- including the first gene therapy and the first CAR-T therapy in the US -- Novartis is a true pioneer. I oversaw external and select internal communications on early-stage research, and led executive communications for Jay Bradner, President of the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). My team also launched programs to develop and leverage scientists as multi-channel ambassadors, and shaped and executed many joint projects with business development, IR, and HR.

I led teams at this elite communications agency serving high-growth companies reshaping life sciences and healthcare, with a special focus on executive counsel and external communications. Client activities included a $400M acquisition, a first-ever FDA approval, and COVID-19 vaccine development at the height of the pandemic.

Fulfilling a longtime dream of founding my own shop, I advised on marketing and communications for innovators in technical fields including biomedicine, healthcare, and data science. Clients included Fortune 500s, nascent startups, VCs and accelerators, global academic consortia, and individual scientists and executives seeking strategic thought partnership.

I left journalism to co-found a network of web portals for scientific and clinical information-sharing. By pitching directly to leaders in the innovation ecosystem, our team raised $20M+ from NIH, philanthropy, and pharma. Our first portal was described by a senior official at NIH as "so successful that it [became] the partnership gold standard for providing publicly accessible analytical tools" for human genomics. What a wild ride — I served as the newspaper's sole journalist exclusively covering higher education including MIT, Harvard, the Massachusetts state system, and the area's other 70+ academic institutions. Mostly, I wrote for Page One, and was honored to win the paper's internal Excellence Award for high-impact journalism three times in 15 months.

I was fortunate to start my career at Newsweek when print was king. Over a decade, I wrote and reported dozens of cover stories and features, including a series that led to the retraction of a high-profile Science paper on human genetics. To engage and broaden our audience, I appeared frequently on CNN and MSNBC and spoke at global conferences focused on infectious disease, stem cells, and other biomedical topics. I also freelanced for other publications (e.g., The Economist, Nature, Frontline), co-authored two books, and reported from the scene on 9/11. Honors included the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism and the Award for Excellence in Health Care Journalism.
