Communications Manager
I was responsible for the marketing and communications output for one of sport's oldest governing bodies - which has a proud history dating back to 1880 - including the organisation's website, media relations, branding, campaigns, social media and YouTube channel.I helped to develop a new website that drove better engagement with those in the sport, from those just looking to get fit at grass roots level to Olympic hopefuls looking to win gold.Boxing is full of inspiring volunteers who give their own time every day to not only develop the next generation of champions, but also to stop youngsters falling into gang crime (including drugs, guns and knives) in some of the poorest communities in England. I hope I have helped tell some of their remarkable stories and prompt others to follow their lead.
Media And Communications Manager
I managed the day-to-day relationships with local and national media across print, broadcast and online formats, helping with enquiries, setting up interviews with members of the Trent Bridge team and monitoring media activity. Alongside that I also worked to promote the Club and its brand through work on publications, collateral, by managing online website content, which was updated several times a day during the summer months when the season was in full swing, and by producing key press releases.I also contributed to the marketing team's social media output via Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, where we have a significant following.
Marketing And Communications Assistant
I was responsible for the organisation's media communications, which includes writing press releases, liaising with media, co-ordinating press calls and building strong relationships to maximise exposure of the work carried out by the team, partners and stakeholders. I also put together e-newsletter and corporate publications to promote the work of Derbyshire Sport and its other associated brands and I use social media to effectively signpost individuals to relevant news items, programmes and information.I led on the organisation and delivery of ICON talented athlete launch events around the county - nine districts in all - and assisted on the planning and delivery of the Derbyshire Sports Awards (one of the highlights in the county's sporting calendar), and the Young Media Leaders programme for the Derbyshire School Games. In addition to carrying out the day-to-day management of the Derbyshire Sport website, I was also tasked with copywriting the content for their new website, as well as project managing the successful migration to a new site with the appointed web developers.
Freelance Writer
Alongside my role at Derbyshire Sport, I wrote on news, sport and features for a number of organisations in print and on-line, including the BBC, Welbeck Cricket Club, the Catena Business Network, B2 Cricket and the Mansfield Chad. I also wrote bids for JAJ Enterprises.
Writer
I worked on a number of projects both in print and on-line in a variety of styles tailored to the client’s needs. For The Manager magazine, the membership publication of football’s League Managers Association, I sourced stories for the news section and wrote articles featuring individuals such as Andy Roxburgh, Dario Gradi, Alan Curbishley, John Gregory, Terry Venables, Hope Powell, Brian Little, Michael Johnson, Chris Sutton and Bill Furniss, as well as organisations such as the FA, the Football League, the British Gymnastics team, the Caterham F1 team, Rugby World Cup 2015, Delaware North Companies and Gill technical marine clothing specialists.I interviewed England cricketers Matt Prior, Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott for cover stories for the Professional Cricketers’ Association’s First Class corporate magazine, while other work included bespoke business profiling of the likes of Adidas, Sky Sports, Grant Thornton, NatWest and Laithwaite’s Wine, Q&As with Neil Fairbrother, Shaun Udal and Mike Gatting and a build-up to the 2013 Ashes. The PCA’s player magazine, Beyond the Boundaries, required me to come up with imaginative cover concepts, and interviews with current and past players on major issues including careers and welfare, news and obituaries.I also covered Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club for the Press Association, providing deadline-driven match reports, and edited Swanny, the benefit year magazine of England cricketer Graeme Swann, for which I was responsible for the editorial production from concept through to completion.Outside the world of sport, I have written material for the Midlands Family Business Awards programme and magazine and the Stubbs equestrian brochure and website.
Sports Writer
I acted as cricket correspondent, which encompasses regular coverage of Nottinghamshire CCC in County Championship, 40-over and 20-over cricket as well as local Notts Premier League, South Notts League and Bassetlaw League cricket and also some junior cricket. At the same time, I was correspondent for Mansfield Town FC, reporting on their fortunes in both the Football League and Football Conference, including a trip to Wembley Stadium for the FA Trophy final. This included ‘live’, running copy for the Saturday Football Post, and I have also written for the official Mansfield Town matchday magazine, The Stag.In both roles, there was a need to develop strong, long-lasting contacts to generate exclusive newsworthy stories, fresh angles, innovative features and thought-provoking analysis and an ability to work to tight deadlines. I also produced regular ‘specials’ and pull-outs, As part of a busy sports desk, I also covered local football including Eastwood Town, Hucknall Town, Ilkeston Town and Carlton Town and dipped into other sports as and when required, from athletics to water polo. Interviewees included the likes of Andrew Flintoff, Rebecca Adlington, Graham Taylor, Sir Garfield Sobers, Sir Richard Hadlee, Graeme Swann, Stephen Fleming, Stuart Broad, Hashim Amla, Paul Collingwood, Chris Read, Chris Broad, Nigel Clough and Richie Benaud.I was named Midland Sports Journalist of the Year in 2011 after submitting a portfolio of stories that included articles on Nottinghamshire CCC’s dramatic title win and subsequent visit to Buckingham Palace, a badminton duo who had been playing together for 50 years and a feature on a Mansfield Town footballer who had moved to play in Wellington, New Zealand. Sports Editor/Sports Reporter
As Sports Editor I had overall responsibility for the sports content across two paid-for titles, The Worksop Guardian and Dinnington Guardian, plus four other free newspapers, which amounted to a minimum of 15 pages per week. This included collating and editing submitted stories, generating lead pieces and features, writing headlines, designing pages and arranging photography. Overseeing the organisation of the popular Worksop Guardian-Lee Westwood Junior Golf Championships was another key part of the role.As Sports reporter, I was required to follow semi-professional team Worksop Town around the country and produce news, match reports, previews and interviews. I also sourced regular features for the paid-for papers' ‘show pages’ and developed eye-catching stories from one-paragraph snippets.
