Dougherty Valley High School is the top performing large public high school in the state of California. I worked with my department to redevelop our curriculum. We prioritized an inquiry-based approach to learning that utilized real-world problems and solving using multiple methods to create a more dynamic learning experience. To share information with my students, I used YouTube to host math tutorial videos I created, providing supplementary support outside of school hours.I developed a new Algebra 2 course, which teaches Algebra 2 through programming. Students learn the traditional curriculum and write programs to solve future problems. We also leveraged digital tools like spreadsheets and graphing calculators to solve problems using multiple methods and the most appropriate tools. Through activities like measuring the height of buildings using trigonometry and looking for patterns in the graphs of functions, my students became more robust, flexible problem solvers.I was PLC Technology Committee Chair from 2011-2014. During my tenure, I created professional development for teachers, showing them how to leverage technology to better communicate information to students and collaborate with their colleagues. I developed a shared calendar and digital file system to facilitate that collaboration.
