Completed my doctoral studies in pharmacology. Thesis entitled the 'Effect of dopamine and age on the neuronal co-expression of D1 and D2 dopamine receptors in the striatum'. Utilizing the pharmacological in-vivo rat model of Parkinson's disease and immunohistochemistry techniques showed that dopamine receptors change their expression pattern post dopamine loss. The area of the adolescent rat's brain known as the substantia nigra was surgically lesioned and allowed to deteriorate over time. At multiple time points post lesioning the brain was surgically removed for immunohistological analyzed. The progression of the changes in dopamine receptors was followed in multiple brain section across the length of the brain. Each brain section was triple immunohistologically stained by antibodies to the D1, D2 receptors and a nuclear marker. The expression pattern was quantitated by Bioquant software analysis. The conclusion revealing that as the loss of dopamine progressed the receptors for dopamine modified their expression. Modified dopamine receptors expression would mean that externally dosed L-dopa could have differential effects based on when it was begun in the progression of the disease.
