Returning to Malcolmson Architects for my final summer holiday as a student, I carried out surveys, created BIM models and associated drawings of several listed buildings, and designed schemes for residential projects. Liaising with a structural engineer and members of staff within the local authority's Planning and Building Control departments also pushed projects onwards. Towards the end of summer, I prepared the technical resolution drawings for the conversion of a listed church, and successfully presented clients with a design scheme for an extension to their house.

Joining Malcolmson Architects again, I conducted several surveys of existing buildings, drew existing drawings and made BIM models, prepared planning applications and designed a sketch scheme for the renovation of a derelict school building.

Working for Morgan Architects as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant, I was involved with several projects at varying stages, from feasibility through to tender stages. I gained a knowledge of Autodesk Revit and carried out renders, construction drawings and large-scale feasibility studies. It was rewarding to see my input on such a range of drawings for building warrant and tender.

I was invited to return to Malcolmson Architects to work full time as an Architectural Assistant, where my duties included the preparation of planning applications, carrying out surveys, attending client meetings, and preparing existing drawings and models from survey information, as well as general office admin. The directors informed me that I make great tea and coffee.

I worked as a Seasonal Visitor Services Advisor at Shetland's VisitScotland iCentre, where I offered advice and resources to tourists and locals alike. Queries from visitors could be about history, arts, culture, geology, nature, archaeology or architecture, so it was important to know a range of information about Shetland and Scotland, and greet all customers with a professional, enthusiastic attitude.

I was approached by Malcolmson Architects who needed an Assistant over Summer 2021. Giving me an insight into small architectural practice, I lead the design and preparation of planning and building warrant drawings for several projects. I was involved with other projects by preparing drawings and a three-dimensional model of surveys, and general office duties.

From the age of 14, my after-school and weekend job at the Brae Building Centre hardware shop introduced me to many construction trades and processes. As well as assisting customers, who consisted of joiners, construction workers, electricians and plumbers, I was responsible for restocking goods, preparing orders and keeping the shop presentable.
