State Worker
Michigan Department Of Natural Resources
I joined a team whose efforts are concentrated in restoring the native population of lake sturgeon to The Great Lakes. In order to achieve this goal I used a variety of skills and techniques. Gill netting, electro-fishing, egg rearing, egg matting, larval drifts and night visual assessments were all part of our sampling methods. We also implement a variety of tagging on our fish including PIT tags and Floy tags. Aside from field sampling, I have also gained experience in aquaculture by raising sturgeon eggs in a portable fish hatchery which we later released as juveniles into the Kalamazoo River. Lastly, my duties also included the aging of lake sturgeon, walleye and catfish.
