Incident manager within the global command centre at Barclaycard. Managing high-profile, large scale incidents with significant financial and external impact.

I was in charge of 57 civilian and military people in the fire department. This involves ensuring that they are all able to carry out their primary role of responding to potentially catastrophic emergencies by managing their training and development, providing support during personal difficulties and leading by example. I am also one of only 7 out of 27 controllers qualified to supervise the entire tower. During these periods I am directly responsible for up to 30 people and the safety of dozens of £70 million aircraft and their crew. The job involves a great deal of technical knowledge and decision making in a high tempo and dynamic workplace.

I started my air traffic control career as a team leader of 20 people. This job was not always given to newly qualified controllers and involved a great deal of leadership during a testing period for the department. I was responsible for several projects designed to improve the airfield, with the value being over £1 million.

The air traffic control course has the second highest failure rate of any of the hundreds of courses within the Royal Air Force. I was one of only 50% of the students who started my course to pass it. Air traffic control training teaches a wide variety of transferable skills, the main ones being an ability to make high pressure decisions, being able to work well within a team and quick thinking and problem solving.

The training in leadership and management at Royal Air Force College Cranwell is world renowned, as was shown by the high number of international cadets who were paid to attend by their respective countries. Cadets are trained to develop a sense of teamwork, individual responsibility and resourcefulness.

I was responsible for selling sports and activities to guests. This would often involve sales of approximately £1000 per day. The role also required organisational skills in order to run tournaments and deliver events for up to 200 people.

I developed a marketing strategy for a medium sized solicitors firm for two new areas of law. This involved researching the market, creating and then implementing a marketing strategy. The new areas of law had the potential to be worth over £25,000 a year in increased revenues to the firm. I was given an award for my work by the Shell STEP graduate interns programme.
