Matt Wagner is the Principal at MWDC, an architectural design and consulting firm specializing in visualization and building technology research. Matt’s involvement in cross-disciplinary projects has formed a body of work connecting the social and environmental responsibilities that are inherent to the discipline of design, as well as the conceptual thought and imagination that is inherent to the creation of design. Prior to MWDC, Matt was a Professor in the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech for a decade; his teachings and research have made significant impact in the design industry. His research has been published both nationally and internationally, and he has spoken about his work at both national and international conferences and professional meetings. Matt worked for William McDonough + Partners prior to joining Virginia Tech.Matt received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech. He has received awards for outreach and design from Virginia Tech, Metropolis Magazine, Architectural Record, the International Living Future Institute, the American Institute of Architects, and the Interior Design Educator’s Council.Matt is a Licensed Architect as well as a Certified Interior Designer in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and is a LEED Accredited Professional.

Through contextually driven concepts, environmental analysis, and the screening of materials, we created buildings that promote healthy, uplifting environments. At William McDonough + Partners, Matt worked on numerous domestic and international projects, all of which were designed and documented for LEED certification. Such projects include the WM+P Make It Right House in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the Ferrer Research + Development Tower in Barcelona, Spain. While in this position, Matt coordinated on-site construction aspects of design through detailed discussion, decision making, and hands on building. Matt led the fabrication and installation of exterior Alucobond and polycarbonate envelope, fabrication and installation of interior bathroom core maple wall. He was engaged in all areas of construction and transportation efforts from chassis foundation to completion. For the competition criteria, Matt assisted with construction documents; while at the Solar Decathlon he helped complete construction, and guided walk through tours of the house in Washington DC.
