The Ivey Centre for Building Sustainable Value (BSV Centre) is recognised globally for its excellence in research and teaching on sustainable business. The BSV Centre’s new strategy aims to catalyze Canada’s transformation to a sustainable, equitable, and prosperous future through high-impact research, teaching, and industry partnerships. My role is to lead the implementation of the Centre’s strategy, build key partnerships, and manage the Centre’s team, programs, and operations.Major achievements and responsibilities include:- Development of the BSV Centre’s new strategy in consultation with the Faculty Director, Dean’s Office, and the Ivey Sustainability Advisory Council.- Management and coordination of the Canadian Corporate Strategies for Net Zero initiative to build alignment between ambitious corporate climate action and long-term innovation and value creation.- Launch of the Ivey Innovation Learning Lab (now Innovation North) , an initiative of 20 leading Canadian organizations (including RBC, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Bell Canada, and CPA Canada) aiming to re-imagine corporate innovation processes to improve societal outcomes through systems thinking approaches.- Collaboration with lead faculty to launch Ivey’s new programs to accelerate the transition to the circular economy in Canada and to establish innovative financial instruments for conservation finance.- Development of the new Business and Sustainability graduate diploma in the Ivey MSc. Program, and delivery of the ESG in Action Workshop as part of the curriculum.- Management of six staff and oversight of BSV Centre operations including communications, finances, administration, and reporting.

The WCCD, located at the Global Cities Institute at the University of Toronto, convenes the first and only global network of cities reporting to an open data portal with third-party verified, globally-standardized (ISO) city data. Comparable city data is critical for building more sustainable, resilient, smart, prosperous and inclusive cities.As a global leader on standardized metrics, the WCCD is implementing ISO 37120 Sustainable Development of Communities: Indicators for City Services and Quality of Life, the new international standard; created for cities, by cities. The WCCD has developed the first ISO 37120 certification system and the Global Cities Registry.I led the establishment of the WCCD as a global hub for creative and impactful partnerships across cities, corporate partners, international organizations, and academia to further innovation, envision alternative futures, and build better and more livable cities.

The WBCSD provides a platform for business leadership and action for sustainable development, working with governments, non-governmental and intergovernmental organizations. I led the Sustainable Cities program focusing on scaling up the role of business as a key solutions provider for the complex, inter-connected sustainability challenges facing the world’s cities. Key responsibilities and achievements:- Leadership of the Urban Infrastructure Initiative, a major global partnership of 14 leading companies working with 10 cities around the world including Philadelphia (USA); Guadalajara (Mexico); Yixing (China); and Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Surat and Vadodara (India).- Building partnerships and collaborative relationships with key urban sustainability stakeholders (ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability, C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, CITYNET, UN-HABITAT, and UNEP)- Development of the WBCSD’s new Zero Emissions Cities Initiative aiming to work collaboratively with leading cities to transform their energy systems towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Competitiveness is key to enabling local firms’ participation in the value chains of large investments and for promoting sustainable local economic development.- Representation of WBCSD in its membership of international partnerships, including the UN Secretary General’s High Level Group on Sustainable Energy for All.- Expert lead for the WBCSD Measuring Impact Framework, a globally-recognized tool for measuring the impact of business on society.

EAP is an international think-tank that works with the global engineering industry and its key stakeholders to maximize the industry’s contribution to sustainable development and poverty reduction. It was established by the leading UK professional engineering institutions with the support of the British Government.Key responsibilities and achievements:- Strategic planning, partnership development and coordination of EAP’s program activities.- Leadership of EAP’s extractive industries program to maximise the development benefits of large natural resource investments, working with and advising major industry players include BP, Anglo American, AMEC, the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) and the International Finance Corporation.- Management of a partnership with the global engineering firm Arup to develop the software-based sustainability appraisal tool (ASPIRE) for infrastructure developments.

SACEP is the intergovernmental environment organization for the eight countries of South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives). SACEP’s mission is to promote sustainable development and improved environmental management in South Asia through enhanced regional cooperation.Key responsibilities and achievements:- Expansion of SACEP’s program activities through project development and the extension of SACEP’s governmental and civil society partner network. - Preparation of policy papers for SACEP’s Director General on regional cooperation in the promotion and development of renewable energy and through the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.- Mobilization of funding for an Integrated Coastal Area and River Basin Management (ICARM) Pilot Project in the Attanagalu river basin in Sri Lanka. - Initiation of collaborative activities with IUCN, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) and the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences.

Kabul, Afghanistan.

CoAR is a large Afghan NGO that implements community development and infrastructure rehabilitation projects in a number of provinces of Afghanistan. My position at CoAR was organized through Australian Volunteers International under AusAID’s Capacity Building Support for Afghan Civil Society Groups Project.Key responsibilities and achievements:- Provision of support to CoAR’s management in building the organization’s institutional and technical capacities to meet its strategic objectives.- Project management advice for the Rural Rehabilitation to Strengthen Sustainable Return to Western Afghanistan Project, assisting the sustainable return of thousands of refugees and internally displaced people in Herat Province. - Design and implementation of a capacity building needs assessment with a major program funder and its six local NGO partners working in the water and sanitation sector.

Iluka Resources Limited is a multinational Australian mining company that is one of the world’s largest producers of titanium minerals. I was the senior environmental professional for the mineral processing operations in south-west Western Australia (the North Capel Synthetic Rutile (SR) Plant and the Capel Minerals Separation Plant). Key responsibilities and achievements:- Senior environmental manager responsible for the environmental performance and regulatory compliance of two major processing plants.- Recruitment and supervision of a team of four professional staff and two technicians.- Management of capital expenditure budget of AUD12 million including the construction of a major hazardous waste containment structure and the decommissioning of a one million cubic meter waste storage facility.

Capel, Western Australia.

As the Process Engineer – Environmental, I commissioned and supervised numerous technical investigations to assess and improve key aspects of processing plant environmental performance. These included investigations of pollution control equipment efficiency, hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide emissions management, dispersion modeling, ambient air quality assessment, and surface and groundwater quality modeling.

Bangka Island, Indonesia.

P.T. Koba Tin is an industry leader in environmental management in the South East Asian tin mining industry. My primary responsibility was the development and implementation of an ISO-14000 Environmental Management System. I prepared environmental management plans for mining, metallurgical operations and land rehabilitation activities through liaison with senior management and operations personnel. I also managed the Aquaculture Community Development Project, a key component of Koba Tin’s mine rehabilitation program.

Sydney, Australia.

My role was one of the first dedicated corporate climate change roles in Australia and was created to coordinate Caltex’s climate change response, primarily through the finalization of a Greenhouse Challenge voluntary emissions reduction agreement with the Commonwealth Government. I developed a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for all Caltex refining, distribution and retail facilities and prepared forecasts of future emissions scenarios. I also coordinated a climate change awareness program for Caltex’s 3000 employees.
