About Matthew Nelson

For the past 20 years, I have had the privilege of playing my own small role in advancing the field of human genetics. From that time we have progressed from knowing just a handful of common variants that influence complex traits, to tens of thousands of such genetic factors. Over the years, my passion has grown to identify which of those genetic factors hold key insights that could result in transformative medicines. Our new approach to R&D has at its core science related to the immune system and will leverage human genetics, functional genomics and advanced analytics to improve the probability of successfully developing new medicines.In October 2019 I joined Deerfield Management, a premier healthcare investment firm, to bring the science and knowledge of genetics and genomics to help drive effective decisions.

    I lead a group of 11 statistical geneticists, help develop and guide genetics strategy, and conduct genetic research. Research activities include investigating the role of growing body genome-wide association studies to inform drug target selection and validation, association analysis via deep resequencing, improving pharmacogenetics experiment design and developing methods and strategies for drawing inferences from both small- and large-scale genetic association studies. Other recent activities include the development of the POPRES genetic resource for pharmacogenetics research and co-chairing the scientific management committee of the cross-industry International Serious Adverse Event Consortium (iSAEC).
