About Matthew Davis

I love data. As a kid I observed my father tracking his blood glucose blood levels to manage his diabetes. The numbers on the glucose monitor indicated the quality of his health and alerted when action was required. I learned early on that the data we collect about ourselves and the world have extraordinary value.Decades later, I pursued a Neuroscience PhD with an emphasis on computational methods and data analysis. Here I gained extensive experience building data analysis pipeline lines from scratch (Python and MATLAB), custom digital/analog experimental hardware, time series analysis, signal processing, modeling, and inferential statistics, to analyze large volumes of rodent neural activity data. In subsequent startup work I learned the tools of the trade in an applied setting, where I became proficient in SQL, git, computer vision, and writing documented and testable code in Python, producing data visualizations and distilling insights for technical/nontechnical folks. What sparks joy in me is taking complex datasets and extracting insights that have big impact.

Matthew Davis Work Experience Details
  • Allen Institute
    Scientist
Allen Institute Mar 2022 - Present
    Seattle, Washington, United States
  • The University Of Texas At Austin
    Graduate Research Assistant
The University Of Texas At Austin Sep 2012 - Aug 2020
    1) Developed the lab’s first codebase for processing multi-terabyte two-photon calcium imaging data from mouse hippocampal neuronal spiking, using MATLAB and python (numpy, scipy, etc). Motion artifacts corrected using hidden markov models and image segmentation of neurons using computer vision methods in opencv. Batch processing of large datasets using cron.2) Built from scratch a real-time streaming behavioral data acquisition system based on arduino (C++) for automatic stimulus delivery and data collection of analog/digital signals from physiological sensors. 3) Developed a novel hardware/software solution using python (opencv, pillow) to capture real-time high-speed ocular data and applied markerless behavior tracking DeepLabCut (tensorflow) to extract pupil features. Used signal processing methods to detect blink artifacts and clean signals.
  • Senseye, Inc.
    Research Scientist Iii
    Senseye, Inc. Dec 2018 - Sep 2019
    Austin, Texas Metropolitan Area
    1) Monitored offsite data collection using PostgreSQL + custom data visualization dashboards built with python (plotly, seaborn, bokeh) that reported data quality metrics. These reports caught critical data errors, allowing early intervention, reducing costly data collection time.2) Analyzed ocular time-series data using power spectra measures/inferential statistics and wrote reports that validated the scientific merit of the product to internal/external stakeholders.3) Built a GUI tool for labeling training data in python (opencv, tkinter) which accelerated model prototyping4) Designed key experiments using pupillometry to measure cognitive load in human subjects during VR training scenarios. Conducted human studies according to approved IRB protocols.
