About Maximo Rocha
I graduated with a B.S. in Applied Physics at University of California, Santa Cruz. I have been a Physics Teaching Assistant, an NSF participant in a Sustainable Materials REU, and an undergraduate researcher in experimental condensed matter physics and materials science. I am passionate about ushering in the the next generation of functional materials, and learning about the various impacts that they will have on society, our finite resources, and ultimately our planet.Sustainability in materials science and engineering can be realized in various ways. Some examples include: optimizing synthesis methods and carefully analyzing its byproducts; researching novel atomically-thin materials that could be used for more energy-efficient devices and energy-storage; and understanding the properties of materials at the fundamental level to tailor the properties of existing materials.

Materials Science And Condensed Matter Physics Undergraduate Researcher At Yan Laboratory
Research area: Thin Films / Quantum Materials.Conducted synthesis, characterization, and property-tailoring of materials and heterostructures at the atomic limit. Various methods included: chemical vapor deposition (CVD and LP-CVD), micromechanical exfoliation, reactive-gas and plasma etching, optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL). Presented current literature to the lab group once every month.
Teaching Assistant
Taught a class of 25 students for PHYS 5L: Physics Laboratory 1 for science and engineering majors. Graded lab notebooks on a weekly basis and provided feedback to the students on their understanding of classical physics, technical writing, and error propagation. I was also a UCSC COSMOS course assistant for: The Physics of Atomically Thin Materials in the summer of 2022. Throughout the course, I would hold office hours, provide students with additional help on topics discussed in class, and assist students on their final projects and presentations.
Sustainable Materials Physics Researcher
Full-time summer REU on Sustainable Materials via Yan Laboratory. Fabricated large-area and uniform two-dimensional materials using Chemical Vapor Deposition (AP-CVD and LP-CVD) for applications in brain-inspired computers (memristor device fabrication). The 2D materials I synthesized are: graphene, MoS2, and WSe2. These synthesized materials were then characterized using optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. From scratch, I coded a Python program that when given the parameters of a given single-zone furnace CVD experiment, presentable data is outputted that summarizes the trial experiment.

Resale: Food & Beverage Management
During my time at Gilroy Gardens, I have been promoted to various management roles in the relate department over the course of my four years there. In chronological order, I was a: Resale Team Lead, Special Events Supervisor, Resale Supervisor, and Resale Area Manager. Much of my managerial experience included office and clerical work, such as making phone calls, making spreadsheets, sending emails, scheduling breaks and lunches for the other employees, file-maintenance, amongst various other office duties.
