The Abort Support Console position directly supports the Flight Dynamics Officer (FDO). He/she works closely with other ascent support console team members like ARD Support and Targeting to assess failure and off-nominal performance data, interpret Abort Region data and determine the abort capability/priorities. A high-stress, high-stakes position- fueled by adrenaline at times.

Conduct Software Process Control: formal and informal meetings to determine requirements and evaluate implementation options, design review, code walk-through, testing and evaluation- possibly additional requirements reviews, release and final testing...then deployment! Happy day!

The ARD is the Abort Region Determinator NASA software program, and also the name of my flight design group. We load the initialization data into the ARD, maintain the software and use its output to make performance "boundary calls" to provide astronauts with abort options in the event that something goes wrong in the ascent (uphill) phase of Space Shuttle flights.

Worked as a student worker in support of the main IT Professional for the UW College of Letters and Science (languages, history, ethnic studies, etc.). Maintained Deans' and professors' computers and updated software periodically. Was instrumental in implementing Y2K updates and diagnosing potential problems- even found a work-around solution to a $million plus problem with Y2K and the security system at the campus Elvehjem Art Museum.

Fed paper into printers, cleaned monitors and was a general tech support geek to engineering students at the UW Madison for a year. They certainly didn't utilize my full potential at this job, but I learned a lot about Unix.
