Kennisland is a non-profit action research agency based in the Netherlands that focuses on researching and designing progress in the urbanism, healthcare and education sectors. Due to a perceived gap in the design field when it comes to addressing power, privilege and oppression, I collaborated with Kennisland for my MSc Design graduation thesis. Over a period of six months, I conducted research to better understand the way that power and systemic oppression show up in social and public sector participatory design projects. As a result of my research, I created a framework for power literacy and a field guide that supports designers and researchers in creating more socially just, decolonial and democratic participatory processes.

In this contract role, I was involved in the public engagement and design research for Sidewalk Toronto, a smart city project, and its 307 site. As part of the facilitation team, I conducted user research through a number of methods including observation, interviews and interactions with the public as they engaged with our urban prototypes at the 307 site. Additionally part of my responsibility was for the synthesizing and analysis of the resulting feedback and data into themes that informed the team's iterative design process. I reported directly to the Design Director and Programming Lead.

As HiVE's first Director of Social Impact I lead and executed on our strategic planning, brand strategy, and design processes, all while engaging our members, partners and community stakeholders. I served as the face of the organization, speaking at and facilitating a number of social impact focused events, workshops, design jams and conferences.HiVE is a community hub with a mission is to support and amplify the social impact sector by providing the social cohesion, human capital and resources that enable our members and partners to take on society’s most complex challenges. As VDN's Development Director, I led and facilitated the visioning and strategic planning process for the organization, through a divergent-convergent process which included design research, ideation, prototyping and the development of a Theory of Change and a recommendation based on my findings. I conducted extensive research on social (and design) lab theory and developed a proposal to shift the organization to a new client-facing consulting model which would pull from social lab and other participatory process techniques that are effective in catalyzing systems change. As a VDN Project Lead & Facilitator I worked with clients to design, research and lead design jams and co-design projects with diverse groups of stakeholders on issues including youth empowerment, civic engagement, social inclusion and city building. - The Vancouver Design Nerds exist to facilitate, promote and support positive social, environmental and urban transformation by providing a platform for face-to-face creative collaboration. We design, expedite and improve civic engagement processes and techniques that, through the use of dialogue, art, design, media and other creative methods, act as innovative ways to reconnect citizens with their communities and engage them with their environment.We’ve used our design thinking processes to create solutions to challenges as diverse as affordable housing, civic engagement, public intervention, transportation, poverty, food security, social isolation, waste diversion, the circular economy, and alternative education. We’ve worked with clients such as City of Vancouver, Simon Fraser University, RADIUS, Strathcona BIA, Museum of Vancouver, Surrey Poverty Reduction Coalition, Cascadia Green Building Council, Urban Land Institute, OpenMedia, Fraser Health, Gen Why Media, Vancouver Mini Maker Faire, Metro Vancouver, University of British Columbia, and Emily Carr University, City Studio and HiVE.

As the project lead of Vancouver's first Young Innovators Crawl, an initiative and research project from Simon Fraser University's Public Square and RADIUS SFU in partnership with the City of Vancouver, I was responsible for taking the project from it's ideation to implementation, which included research, curation, stakeholder engagement and communications. I was able to build relationships with the multiple stakeholders involved, including public officials, city and university staff, artists, designers, businesses, funders, and participants. In the research component of this project, I designed and conducted numerous surveys, interviews, focus groups, environmental scans and other secondary research. I then analyzed and synthesized this data into a report which included recommendations for SFU and the City of Vancouver in order to better support and include young innovators and entrepreneurs in the city.This project mixed city-building and public engagement to further deepen a supportive and thriving ecosystem for young innovators operating in Vancouver. Without much lead-time or direction, I ran with the idea and created a festival-like event that engaged thousands. Some of the goals of the Young Innovators Crawl were to: -Engage the public and raise awareness of the growing community of young innovators in our midst, their potential, and their positive impact on our local economy;-Bring together and empower an interdisciplinary network of collaborators; generate a web of innovators and activities, partnerships, networks and knowledge;-Present an opportunity for innovators to secure VC, seed funding, or other in-kind or resource support;- Undertake research via surveys and crowdsourcing to discover what supports exist for young innovators, and what gaps exist in the innovation ecosystem;-Create micro-website that will feature all innovators, with personal and project profile; including short videos of each innovator.

The original #hatch was formed in Toronto by a group of amazing entreprenuerial do-gooders. While Maya was working at the Centre for Social Innovation in the summer of 2013 #hatch hosted an event there. Inspired by what she saw, she decided that Vancouver needed a similar event to support its budding social entrepreneurial community. Thus #hatch Vancouver was born.
