Building Understanding through International Learning and Development (BUILD): India is a student-run sustainable development organization in Thottiyapatti village in Tamil Nadu, India that focuses on holistic rural development through improvements in education, income generation, and health and sanitation. We worked in partnership with Payir, a local NGO, and local government workers to create and implement projects, such as the creation of an EcoSans toilet block, learning center, and community health and income generation clubs (with a focus on women’s economic empowerment). I specifically managed the Campus Outreach, Financial, and Monitoring and Evaluation Committees, new member recruitment, and field visits. I was a recipient of two $5,000 grants under the EMPOWER Fellowship at the Institute for Global Leadership to travel to Thottiyapatti. The first grant was received in 2013 to pursue the creation of Community Health Clubs. The second grant was received in 2014 to monitor post-construction improvements to EcoSan toilets and implement behavioral change models.
