As a solicitor in private practice with Harper MacLeod LLP, which I co-founded with Lorne Crerar CBE, and from which I retired as Senior Partner in 2017. Throughout my time with Harper Macleod I was a member of its Managment Committee and was, jointly with its Co-founder responsible for building the form from its very small roots through to it having 70 plus partners when I retired following being involved in a serious road action which left me significantly disabled. In my professional life I specialised in Commercial Litigation, Planning & Environmental, Commercial Contracts, Employment, and Sports Law as well as being extensively involved in Gambling and Mining and Minerals Law. I was awarded the title of ‘Scottish Solicitor of the Year’ at the Law Awards of Scotland in 2003 and 2014.I am now the principal legal advisor to the Scottish Professional Football League and was the Lead Partner advising Glasgow 2014 in the planning and operation of the XX Commonwealth Games.I have a wide range of experience and expertise in relation to employment and litigation matters, especially in the provision of advice in relation to professional negligence, banking, property related litigation, trade union and industrial relations matters as well as in relation to insolvency issues which are sensitive and/or complex. I took the lead in negotiating complex contracts for clients of the firm. Such matters have included commodities supply, software and commercial services, equipment and machinery supply, construction and numerous substantial contracts for the supply of services. For the SPFL I now undertake the same type of work although the contracts concern Broadcasting, Media Agency, Product Licensing and a wide range of Football agreements such as player contracts, management agreements, rules, regulations and articles as well as participation agreements. I was, when with Harper Macleod, recognised in the areas of dispute resolution, licensing and sport in Chambers UK and also recognised in the areas of commercial litigation and sport in the Legal 500.I am an Emeritus member of the Discipline Panel of the Scottish Rugby Union as well as being a World Rugby, 6 Nations, European Rugby Championship and Rugby Championship Judicial Officer, Committee Chair, and Appeals Chair, also was for some 13 years a Legal Chairman and Arbitrator at the UK National Anti-Doping Panel.Qualifications: LLB NP Qualified: 1982
