Freelance — it's always been part of my design practice. Whether it's homegrown projects, smaller clients and friends, or short term contracts, freelance is where my skills stretch, grow and breath. Created UI, interaction and visual design assets from wireframe to code for international publishing company through productive collaboration with stakeholders and senior executives — consistently exceeding expectations. I created style guides for long term maintenance of visual assets and worked with internal / external peers to discover problems / solutions that ultimately pushed products forward.

Lead classes of post-graduate students through typographic principles, techniques and history. Each term, the course syllabus was developed, expanded and refined, seeking to focus students on the mastery of type and strengthen critical thinking. The development of my leadership and mentoring skills were key to success in this role.

Worked with product / project managers to discover problems and create solutions for multiple content / commerce initiatives, always with an eye toward design excellence and growth. My practice grew enormously in this role, ultimately designing, developing and maintaining multiple advertising and editorial products. I also learned the value of collaborating and sharing knowledge around best practices in the then emergent world of web standards.

Designed and developed user interface for newspaper group’s six Bay Area regional websites, working effectively and consistently within and around multiple content management systems — often working with in-house CMS development team to grow functionality. I also had the pleasure of collaborating with the excellent editorial team to produce a few award winning interactive features.

Worked with back-end team to flesh out in-house content management system & associated sites. Built out front-end of six websites through guidance of academic program directors. Mentored non-technical professionals and their staff in online functionality and web basics.

Designed, produced & quality assured content within tight daily publishing schedule. Produced features that served as benchmarks of sound user-experience. Primary liaison between editorial & graphics departments.
