It’s rare for a marketer to have worked on both the business side and agency side of the industry. In this newly created position, Megan was marketing manager for the Zimmer Autogroup—which consists of Zimmer-Wheaton GM and Zimmer Autosport Mercedes-Benz. Her role included managing the brand standards for GMC, Buick, and Mercedes-Benz, communicating with the manufacturers to apply co-op advertising programs, as well as coordinating promotions and events. In order to grow Zimmer Autogroup’s sales and customer awareness, Megan was put in charge of an extensive budget, media buying and planning, directing local promotions for national incentives, suggesting creative concepts, and, if that wasn’t enough, lead generation.

This part-time entrepreneurial pursuit as a freelance marketing consultant placed Megan in control of advertising and public relations for various industries, such as real estate development, skincare, and hospitality. To foster success, Megan immersed herself in many different client initiatives, including full branding, marketing strategy, launch events, social media, training and implementation programs, and media buying. Assisting these businesses was a vital learning experience for Megan. It was also a pleasure to assist in each and every company’s growth.

Though finding solutions for a diverse range of businesses was rewarding in itself, each day also managed to be fun and exciting thanks to the wonderful people and challenges endemic to each company.

Within the marketing arm of Thompson Rivers University’s “Students In Free Enterprise” executive team, Megan was responsible for brand and reputation management, community awareness, sponsorship, and events. The following list, while not exhaustive, provides an accurate representation of the duties and achievements for which she was responsible: • Increased SIFE TRU’s awareness not only on campus thanks to club days, on-campus events, and promotional material, but in the surrounding Kamloops community, too• Coordinated media communications, wrote press releases, and planned public events• Coordinated rebranding for SIFE TRU—helping it become the most active club on campus • Designed and implemented a recruitment campaign for new members, increasing SIFE’s membership to include 7 different faculties across campus • Created sponsorship packages that allowed her team to run community-based projects and support competitions on the regional and national level • Advised project managers on the marketing and sponsorship requirements for their respective projects • Represented SIFE at various networking events

Megan worked within a team to develop a marketing communications strategy for the Homelessness Action Plan. Part of this strategy included promoting and hosting a community forum for the HAP. Furthermore, Megan and her colleagues created two community events to generate support for the Homelessness Action Plan and conducted a client needs analysis and a survey to discover local perspectives on homelessness.

At FH Joanneum, one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Austria, Megan competed a semester of study while travelling independently. Some of her formative experiences in Europe included: • Building a strong network of international contacts• Acquiring knowledge, perspective, and gaining understanding of cultural differences• Developing confidence to act in uncertain situations • Adapting her behaviour in order to succeed in a different culture• Becoming immersed in German language• Maintaining an A average in her degree program

Edge Publishing is a Kamloops-based business responsible for publishing The Downtown and North Shore Echo, two local newspapers. Megan’s various marketing initiatives included: • Building strong relationships with clients, which grew her business base for subsequent team members• Participating in design of new advertising campaigns for new clients• Recognizing opportunities in the community for story or pictorial ideas• Visiting local downtown businesses to maintain communication and follow up with clients • Identifying potential clients and approaching them with advertising solutions• Providing insight into campaigns and their effectiveness from a student perspective• Assisting clients to use their advertising options throughout the Echo most effectively

Through the TRU Cooperative Education Program, Megan: • Participated in the planning and implementation of various recruitment events• Visited local high schools, doing up to 9 oral presentations about TRU per day• Provided insight into marketing communications for both print and web formats• Conducted campus tours for high school groups and visitors consisting up to 35 people• Travelled to high schools in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba to make presentations about the benefits of attending TRU and living in Kamloops• Liaised with counsellors and teachers to provide information and program updates on TRU• Represented TRU at career fairs and similar events in a professional and engaging manner• Provided input and insight into marketing and recruitment activities from a student perspective
