She is also a Senior Research Scientist at the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) at Teachers College, Columbia University. Mimi holds a PhD in Education Policy and Social Analysis from Teachers College, Columbia University and a BA in Political Science from Rice University.Mimi is a quantitative social scientist who works at the intersection of education policy, political science, and labor economics. She studies the political economy of education, focusing in particular on inequality, governance, and teacher politics and policy. Her aim is to contribute and share new knowledge that reflects and responds to the needs of policymakers, teachers, and communities, particularly those that have been marginalized by educational systems. Currently, Mimi's research centers around teacher unionization and teacher labor markets. She has also written about urban politics and education, philanthropies, federal-state relations in education, teacher support, and teacher politics. Her work has been published in the Journal of Research of Educational Effectiveness, Economics of Education Review, Urban Affairs Review, and The ANNALS of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.Prior to graduate school, Mimi taught middle school and was an instructional coach in Houston, Texas.Currently, she lives in Providence, RI with her husband and son. In her spare time, she enjoys reading fiction, cooking biscuits (and other things), and running outdoors. Though her legal name is Melissa, friends, family, and colleagues have called her Mimi since her earliest days.
