What does laser scanning mean to you? Over the course of my career, it has been an exciting journey so far. Almost two decades ago, laser scanning was a tool to capture details on a tall rock face that was completely inaccessible. Then it became a tool to collect data to recreate props for a blockbuster movie. From there it became an effective method to collect data on the busy and congested city streets of Boston, MA … and eventually so much more than any of us ever imagined.Today, laser scanning is a tool that incorporates multiple hardware and software workflows and adds value in a variety of applications ranging from forensics to surveying to entertainment. Some of its most beneficial uses come from “outside the box” thinking. When high-quality hardware is combined with powerful software and professional expertise, the potential to catapult a business into new opportunities is very real.As product manager for Leica Geosystems, I have created comprehensive training materials for the HDS laser scanning business, rolled out product launches for the NAFTA region, conducted numerous sales and dealer training events, researched and developed new workflows for the numerous markets that laser scanning serves, written numerous technical eZines, promoted the technology from a sales and support point of view, and guided the development of both the HDS hardware and software. But the most meaningful part of my work has been in helping individuals and teams learn the strategies and techniques that enable them to apply laser scanning in ways that lead to increased business success.The technology still has that “wow” factor that it did nearly 20 years ago, and we’re just getting started.
