I designed a replacement for the 20-year-old datafeed system which aggregates information from multiple government sources and makes it available for end users of the Hurrevac program, and have implemented the first portions of it.

I have a specific emphasis on customers in research and data-related fields as well as community organizations and non-profits. Among other projects, I have managed a transition for a statistics consulting firm from a desktop-oriented computational environment to a more truly virtualized and cloud-centric approach, with an eye towards limited budgets and maintaining continuity through the project. I also advised Second Presbyterian Church of Richmond, VA on obtaining faster internet service and better phone service.

Position originated as primary systems and applications administrator of campus-wide e-mail systems based on Cyrus IMAP, Sendmail, Solaris, and related technologies. With migration of campus e-mail to MS Exchange system, I transitioned to a general Solaris and Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems administrator group for approximately 750 installed OS instances. Responsibilities include development and administration of a Puppet configuration automation environment, Splunk log monitoring software, Citrix Xen virtualized systems environment, Red Hat Satellite service, Zenoss monitoring software, Redmine project tracking, and other internal environments. Administration tasks included working in a 24-hour on call rotation, security fixes as analysis, SAN and NAS storage work at the operating systems and hardware level, network multipathing, capacity planning, and limited project management.

Initially called Durham Central Market, Durham Co-op Market is a start-up cooperative grocery store in downtown Durham, NC. Following the decision to first limit then close the 37-year old Durham Food Co-op due to financial, organizational, and management issues, I joined a group of volunteers focused on building a new cooperative grocery store on a larger footprint with emphasis on policy governance and professional management. I served as the first chair of the unincorporated steering committee which framed and drafted the Articles of Incorporation for the cooperative, then served as the first board President. During my time as President, the cooperative sold over 300 shares in a three month Founding Owner campaign, formed a site selection committee, hired a professional project manager, launched a capital campaign which netted over $400,000 in investment, and eventually sold over 1,000 ownership shares in the cooperative. While I no longer serve on the board, the cooperative has raised $2.5 million in investments including over $1 million in community investment and will open in early 2015.

Provided geographical information and geoinformatics services in service of contracts in the Environmental Sciences division, primarily with EPA but also to NIJ and NIH. Developed white paper for RTI on potential services in geostatistical analysis of crime incident data. Developed data processing tools for very large data sets, including high performance computing architectures. Worked on large informatics proposals for environmental data storage and analysis.

I served as primary administrator and technical lead for the campus electronic mail system. During that time, I implemented the first e-mail spam and virus filtering solution at Duke, led a project to move sensitive network traffic to encrypted channels, developed systems-level scripts and utilities, and developed a web application for efficient composition, editing, and delivery of electronic newsletters for campus news service.
