About Michael Ford
I have experience in synthetic chemistry and analytical chemistry. I spent the first part of my career working in the synthesis labs of both China Lake Naval Air Warfare Center in Ridgecrest, CA, and the Air Force Research Lab at Edwards Air Force Base in CA. I spent some time in the Applied Research division doing more synthetic research at Chem-Trend, LP before transferring to the Analytical Lab here at Chem-Trend, LP where I worked for almost 5 years. I am currently at Dart Container where I my roll includes working in the Analytical Lab as well as contributing to running the EPS pilot plant.I have done synthesis on small-molecule organic materials, as well as organic polymers. On the analytical side of things, I have experience with NMR, IR, GPC, DSC, TGA, and CHNS elemental anlaysis. I am a hands-on worker, learner, and problem solver, and I'm always looking to learn and grow. I am currently working as a Field Service Engineer at Revvity, Inc, working on the INVIVO Imaging product line.
Listed skills include Chemistry, Uv/Vis, Organic Chemistry, Nmr, and 16 others.

Michael Ford work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Field Services Engineer
Our company has transformed. As of now, we are no longer PerkinElmer and have become Revvity, Inc. I am continuing my role as a Field Service Engineer for the In-Vivo Imaging Product Line.
Field Services Engineer
Installation, maintenance, trouble-shooting, and repair of In-vivo imagining equipment.
Chemist Ii - Analytical
I am continuing to work in the Analytical Lab doing all of the previously mentioned analytical work, but I am also learning to run GC.
Chemist I - Analytical
I am working in the Analytical Department doing chemical identification and material property analysis. I use techniques such as TGA, DSC, IR, GPC, Flash Chromatograpy, and CHNS Elemental analysis.
Chemist I - Applied Research
I worked in the Applied Research Group where I will be helped to design and test new materials for use in mold release agents.
Synthetic Chemist
I performed synthesis and materials analysis on polymers designed for use in rocketry and aircraft applications. I synthesized a number of cyanate ester and polyimide products. I performed NMR, DSC, TMA, and TGA analysis. Typical materials analysis of cyanate esters included curing a small puck of material, then getting density, DSC, moisture uptake, and wet TMA data on each sample. I also did some surface analysis of POSS and other Fluorosilicate coatings using contact angle measurements and profilometry.
Farm Hand
Great Lakes Wild Wood Ginseng grows ginseng under the natural shade of a hardwood forest. I do pretty much everything that needs to be done from maintaining tractors and other equipment to spraying chemicals on the plants and pulling weeds to planting new fields.
Teaching Assistant
I worked as a TA under Dr. Kelley Smith teaching Physical Chemistry I lab (CH 3511). I introduced and supervised experiments, and I graded students' lab reports.Experiments supervised included determining Energy of Combustion of a Breakfast Cereal using a bomb calorimeter, determining Enthalpy of Fusion and Melting Point of a substance using a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), determining the entropy of mixing of two substances using EMF differences, measuring chemical equilibrium of the iodine, iodide, triiodide reaction by measuring absorbances in the UV-Vis using a fiber-optic spectrometer, discovering molar and partial molar volume of liquids through density studies using a density meter, and measuring the kinetics of the iodide-persulfate reaction by studying the change of absorbance over time in the UV-Vis spectrum again using the fiber-optic spectrometer. Some basic techniques that were taught included use of volumetric pipets, weighing by difference, measuring volumes using burrets, using volumetric flasks, mixing solutions, use of automatic pipets, as well as basic laboratory safety and hygiene.
Research Technician
I again worked for Dr. Dallas Bates in his laboratory where I worked on organizing and relabeling all of his stored research samples from past research.
Farm Hand
Great Lakes Wild Woodland Ginseng is a company that grows ginseng in the hardwood forests of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. I worked for them part time maintaining the fields through such activities as pulling weeds and spreading chemicals. I also help with the clearing and planting of a new field toward the end of the summer, which required learning how to drive a tractor.
Sporting Goods Sales Associate
I worked as a Sporting Goods Sales Associate where I maintained the sporting goods and automotive departments. I assisted customers in finding items, answered customer inquiries, arranged merchandise for display, worked the register, and handled firearm sales. I basically did whatever needed to be done in order to maintain the smooth operation of my departments and the store in general. Sometimes I would assist customers in cutting fabric in the crafts department, or with getting bikes down over in the toy department, and sometimes I was sent to lawn and garden to move merchandise around and set up displays.
Research Technician, St-3
In March of 2010, I was upgraded from a part time seasonal student employee to a full time Research Technician ST-2, and then later upgraded to an ST-3. I continued to do my research in high temperature composites and bio-fuels for the U.S. Navy at China Lake, CA. I employed a variety of synthetic techniques such as distillations and reflux, separations, rotary evaporation, hydrogenation, recrystallization, column chromatography, and a several analytical techniques including thin-layer chromatography, proton and carbon-13 NMR, and FT-IR. My work in high temperature composites was mainly in the area of renewable cyanate ester resins. In my biofuels work, I worked with several molecules, but the most noteworthy project was producing 1-butene from bio-1-butanol. This required being able to produce and successfully collect a gaseous product.
Student Intern
I worked through NDTI as a contract employee for the U.S. Navy at the Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division, Chemistry Department at the Michelson Laboratories in China Lake, CA. There, I performed organic synthetic research in the areas of high temperature composite materials and bio-fuels. I also helped to maintain the chemical stock room, which included the labeling and disposal of hazardous waste.
Research Technician
I worked for Dr. Dallas Bates doing research in his laboratory on chemical compounds being tested for water treatment using Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry. I also performed some organic synthesis and NMR analysis for some of Dr. Bates' on-going research.
Cashier
Trails Drive In is a small, family owned fast-food restaurant. I worked there as a Cashier where I ran the register, took orders, operated the deep-fryer, and served ice cream. I also maintained the cleanliness and sanitation of the seating area and the restrooms.
Tutor
I worked as a Tutor in the Learning Assistance Center. I mainly taught Chemistry, but on occasion, I also taught math and geology.
