My name is Michael Gray and I am a graduate of Salem State University with a degree in biology, concentrating in marine biology, and a minor in chemistry. Being from Rockport, Massachusetts, I have spent much of my life in the marine environment. I’ve been brought up dependent and amazed by the ocean, my dad and other family members being lobstermen. My current position aboard the Privateer IV at 7 Seas Whale Watch, where I interned and then was hired full-time, has given me a unique opportunity to study Cetaceans up close. Working there and lobstering with my father has allowed me to spend hundreds of hours on the water observing marine species. My time at 7 Seas Whale Watch has allowed me to go in-depth with Cetacean research. I participated in a survey of the local Cetacean species, including the North Atlantic Humpback Whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) and North Atlantic Right Whales (Eubalaena glacialis). The data collection involved identifying individuals through photo identification, recording locations, associations, and interpreting their behaviors. As of this year, I am working with the MA Division of Marine Fisheries as a Recreational Fisheries Field Surveyor. Participating in a large-scale, government sponsored, study has taught me the difficulties that come along with data management and the importance of precision.
