Construction Manager: Elkview Mine – Administration and Maintenance ComplexOverseeing PCL Construction and all other contractors and scopes contributing to the project. Over 400,000 sqft of all new administration and industrial maintenance buildings to extend the operating life of a steel making coal mine. Supported the project through detailed engineering, procurement and construction. Project included new water, gas, electricity and fuel/oil supply, and water and sewage treatment facilities. Before constructing the new facilities, the team mined down 130 ft and moved ~5,000,000 cubic yards of material to extract coal from under the facility, then filled the pit back in with compacted waste rock to create a stable foundation for the new facilities.

Neptune Terminal – Allison Project - Ship Loader & Double Car Rail DumperTook on CM role at tail end of project to help mitigate cost and schedule slippage and help expedite key equipment coming online to support critical production targets. Improved relations and communication between project stakeholders. Helped team build an aggressive but achievable schedule and coordinate up to ~1,000 craft per day within extremely confined operating terminal. Helped manage stacked contractor interfaces and drove the critical path in the field.

Providing project execution experience and best practices in the early stages of project development in order to improve overall performance and reduce costs. Help steward Syncrude’s major projects portfolio thru Business Planning, Concept Select & Basic Engineering.

Manager – Sustaining Capital: Portfolio for the Horizon Upgrader (~$250M/year maintenance) Worked with operations, maintenance and engineering groups to improve organization, definition, estimating and planning of scope further ahead of plant need dates, to improve execution performance and predictability within the portfolio. Project Manager: Fractionator Tower Upgrade (Critical Path Turnaround Project – 30 days) Frac Tower is 60m tall and 8m in diameter with ~290,000 bbls of daily production. After identifying unexpected corrosion, it was decided to replace the top 10m of the tower and to upgrade tower performance with a full tray replacement. Had to plan, design, fabricate and prep for TA execution in under a year, shortening typical fabrication duration of new Hastelloy lined tower top from 14 to 9 months. Worked execution and constructability details to an hourly schedule and utilized an atypical lump sum contract to successfully bring upgraded tower back online in 30 vs 39 days and 30% under budget. Project Manager: Froth Treatment Train 2 (~$1 Billion, ~375 kbpd dilbit output) Picked up project after a failed EPC Lump Sum contract did not meet design improvement expectations and lost over a year of schedule float. Adjusted team culture, changed engineering, procurement and contracting strategies, and augmented the construction team to mitigate damage and manage the critical path daily. With a team that peaked at ~1,000 people working 24/7, was able to recover schedule to startup 3 months ahead and ~$100M under plan. With fully integrated commissioning, the plant was able to exceed design rates on it’s first day of operation.

Project Management Advisor: Major Projects Production Portfolio ($6 Billion+) Responsible for supporting execution improvement for Major Project’s mining & tailings portfolio. Assist with mentoring PMs and CMs and in providing systems, tools and training to improve predictability. Reviewed project scopes and schedules to improve design basis and cost and schedule performance. Performed special assignments and studies as required by senior leadership. Independent Project Review Leader Led independent reviews of major projects. Identified and corrected significant scope and schedule misalignments between key stakeholders, and helped teams implement improvements. Project Management Advisor: Graham Construction Management Contract ($700M+) Redeveloped project management processes to improve organizational and execution effectiveness with a key site contractor. Improved communication, morale and alignment between owner and contractor organizations. Focused on critical Base Mine Dam Project and helped establish guidelines for improved estimating, controls, work release and execution. Helped Develop a new format for Workface Planning to be successfully applied to heavy earthworks.

Project Manager: Aurora Tailings Relocation Project ($130M) Helped improve execution plans and align multiple organizational groups with this project’s unique execution strategy that leveraged Operations personnel and equipment to reduce project costs by roughly 30%. Construction Manager: Upgrading Projects in Plant ($140M) Provided constructability, planning, scheduling, estimating and project management support for two in plant projects. Despite detailed engineering being behind schedule the team was able pull construction roughly 6 months ahead of schedule for the Effluent Pond Pumping Relocation and reduce project costs by ~20%. Project Manager: Aurora Train 1 Crusher & Facilities Relocation ($129M) Project was the winner of Alberta Construction Magazine’s Top Industrial Project of 2010. This project’s relocation of an oil sands production train was the first of its kind in the industry, relocating a 10,000Tph double role crusher & electrical house, two 72kV high voltage corridors, and other support facilities. Project maintained a zero TRIR with over 430,000 field hours. Completed critical relocation turnaround in 35 days versus the 45 day budget saving approximately $30M in potential production losses. Overall scope was completed 6 months ahead of schedule and 20% under budget. Area Construction Manager: Emissions Reduction Project - (~5kT Steel, ~3km3 Concrete - ~$200M) Erected key structural and mechanical components at multiple overlapping elevations within a very constricted plot immediately adjacent to two of Syncrude’s primary production units. Utilized the world’s largest tower crane to set steel and modules (capable of setting 100T at a 100m radius). Worked with safety, quality & engineering and helped resolve camp and labor relations issues, to improve execution performance.

Contracts Engineer: USA & Singapore - Hydrocarbon Fluids Expansion Project Managed strategy, screening and evaluation process. Prepared contract documents, developed proposal review program, and supported commercial negotiations with detailed reimbursable rate audit. Field Engineer: Canada - Syncrude UE-1 Project - (95kbpd Coker, NRU, ESPs & FGD) Expedited construction completion for critical path equipment. Managed interfaces between multiple organizations, improved reporting and streamlined deficiency cleanup to accelerate loop checking process for upgrading plants and heat trace installation and commissioning. Controls Lead: Canada - Syncrude UE-1 Project - (85kbpd Hydrotreater, NG & Hydrogen Plants) Informed company executives of areas where to focus their energy for improved payback. Improved cost and schedule reporting by creating more concise tracking tools, reconciling multiple disjointed systems and establishing greater alignment and cooperation with multiple organizations. Cost Engineer: USA & Venezuela - OCN Heavy Oil Upgrader - (Waste Water Treatment Facility) Existing company estimating tools were not ideal for this unique scope. Developed more accurate estimate through site visits and interviews of key contractor and project team personnel. Project Management Technology: USA - Global Projects Office Aligned diverse opinions of EMRE leadership to improve Best Practice collection and dissemination systems. Redeveloped Contractor Performance Feedback System and EMRE Intranet, and rolled out globally.
