Helped launch and support the Founder Will Parish. I have served as Chair since 10 Strands was founded and am committed to assuring that every student attending California public schools receive high-quality environmental literacy education and graduates with the needed knowledge, awareness and ability to make decisions that promote environmental equity and quality.

Provided leadership to promote professional and leadership development, technical assistance, research, and evaluation services, to strengthen the ability of California Community Colleges to discover and undertake high-quality research, planning, and assessments that improve evidence-based decision making, institutional effectiveness, and success for all students.

Joined with Greenbelt Alliance Board members and staff to collaborate with other public, nonprofit and private sectors in building a Bay Area where the natural and agricultural lands that provide so much to our region are protected and where everyone can live in thriving and equitable neighborhoods that we are proud to call our home.

The National Task Force On Community Leadership provided a forum for philanthropic leaders to explore and articulate the pathways that facilitated the shift to community leadership as a core competency of community foundations. The goal was not to complete the shift, but rather to determine (a) what it would take and (b) what roles the NTF played in elevating and illuminating community leadership as the “good to great” trajectory for community foundations. The effort produced a Blueprint for Action that included an advocacy agenda as well as the outcomes and metrics for assessing community leadership at the institutional, community and field levels.

While at the East Bay Community Foundation, I was able to reinvigorate one of the oldest California community foundations into a national leader, focusing the Foundation’s efforts on local community leadership to solve significant and persistent issues while at the same time growing its asset base from $14m to over $300m – becoming one of the most effective and influential community foundations in the country.
