Create an internal audit function where there wasn't one before.

I am responsible for coordinating with the four campuses of the University of Nebraska system, with responsibilities in the areas of purchasing, risk management and functional areas of the accounting and HR system. I participate as a member of the Council ofBusiness Officers and the Senior Management Team in decision making. My primary area of work has been with the Systems accounting software, SAP. I implemented a long-term plan for continued implementation of the software (including obtaining abudget and signing new contract). Develop charges for health care coverage in our self insured health plan. Responsible for tracking fiscal impact of legislation on the University.

I was responsible for all aspects of the State’s Accounting Division including budgeting and rate setting, establishing a strategic plan, development of the accounting and payroll computer systems, accounting policy making for the State and communicationwith the media and government officials.

The State was trying to determine if it should replace its homegrown accounting system with a vendor owned ERP system. I was selected by the DAS Director to head up this project. In this Initial Critical Design Review phase we determined that moving to an ERP system was the correct path for the State. We did this by comparing the State's requirements to various products and by interviewing many State employees about the current situation. We were able to convince the Legislature and Governor of the need for the software and to obtain the funding of approximately $32 million. While this was a short-term project, it was critical to the long-term State plan.

This was an appointed position, which served at the pleasure of the elected State Auditor. As Deputy I was directly responsible for all office operations including hiring and managing staff (both professional and clerical),developing and administering the budget, approving audit reports, directing the review of filings by political subdivisions, scheduling of staff, coordination with other State departments and elected officials and many other duties as necessary.

I advanced from the entry level position with this then Big 8 accounting firm. As a manager I was responsible for multiple auditing engagements and staff, the timely completion of work, coordination with clients (everything from answering questions to billings and collections) and other managers, keeping the partners apprised of developments and acquiring new business.
