About Michael Kavanagh

I am currently CEO of the Compliance Institute (formally ACOI) , Chair of the IIPA (Irish Inter Professional Association), council member of Chartered Accountants Ireland and a member of the Sustainable Finance Skillnet Committee. Up to recently I was vice chair of the Sport Ireland/FAI Governance Oversight Group, Vice-President of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA Ireland) and Chair of their Education Committee.Prior to that I was Director of DPP with KPMG Ireland, CEO of IAASA (The Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority) having previously been Head of Financial Reporting Supervision with the organisation. I established Ireland's statutory accounting enforcement function (tasked with examining whether the financial reports of listed entities comply with financial reporting standards) and oversaw the establishment of Ireland's statutory Audit Inspection regime (tasked with inspecting the quality of audit work conducted by Ireland's large audit firms) . For 12 years, I was the Irish Observer at the Corporate Reporting Council of the FRC which produces UK and Irish accounting standards. I was also Ireland's representative at ESMA's European Enforcers Co-ordination Sessions which is tasked with co-ordinating accounting enforcement across Europe having chaired a number of ESMA sub-committees.I have represented the State and the accounting profession at various European and international fora including chairing various committees both domestically and intentionally. In the past I was also a member of the Accounting Consultative Committee of CCAB-I and chair of the CPA Institute's Financial Reporting Committee. Prior to that I was the Technical Director and headed up the practice review function at the Institute of Certified Public Accountants. I have acted in the past as examiner, lecturer, solution writer and moderator for a number of accountancy bodies’ professional exams and a frequent presenter on auditing and accounting matters at accountancy body Continuing Professional Development events.

I played a central role in the development of the new accounting standards used in Ireland (Irish GAAP).The Corporate Reporting Council provides strategic input and thought leadership to the FRC Board on accounting and narrative reporting matters and considers and advises the FRC Board on draft UK and Ireland codes and accounting standards, international financial reporting developments (including accounting and reporting standards proposed by the IASB), and on research proposals and other initiatives.
