About Michael Marrone, Phd, Mph

As a translational epidemiologist, my mission is to apply epidemiologic methods to improve health outcomes and eliminate racial disparities in prostate cancer. My vision is to create an atmosphere in which epidemiology methods are applied at the intersection of population science, basic science, and clinical science. My research is supported by a K99/R00 for outstanding early-stage post-doctoral researchers from the National Cancer Institute to generate molecular evidence supporting the expanded use of statins in immune-oncology. I am also applying molecular epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology methods to identify drivers of racial disparities in prostate cancer through common medication use and metabolic perturbations, correlated pathways and exposures. My breadth of professional experiences contributing epidemiologic perspective in multidisciplinary research teams spans multiple complex chronic diseases including diabetes, cancer, and eyes and vision related diseases with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications. My depth of research experience includes epidemiologic methods, observational study designs, statistical analysis (repeated measured, survival analysis, logistic regression, and propensity scores), clinical trial design and conduct, and systematic reviews and meta-analysis. To accomplish my work I think strategically to identify appropriate data assets responsive to study objectives; develop study protocols and statistical analysis plans to fill scientific evidence gaps; build multidisciplinary research teams; apply for and receive research funding; comply with IRB and HIPAA research standards. Through the design and execution of simple tasks I have revealed strategic data insights leading to the launch of new program initiatives and developed strategies to improve the conduct and translation of epidemiologic study findings. I am fueled by challenges and complex problems requiring outside the box thinking to adapt epidemiologic concepts and methods as novel solutions to achieve greater value and insight. I am eager to collaborate with like-minded translational researchers with a sense of urgency to go above and beyond to reduce the burden of cancer in a vibrant, innovative, research environment.
