About Michael Mitchell

I am a second year computational physics PhD student under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Sanvito. I love science as an epistemology, getting into the weeds in academic papers, discussing and presenting new research, and the sense of relief when code runs without bugs.I founded the Theoretical Physics Student Association at Trinity College Dublin that's now filled with brilliant students of all years helping each other improve academically and professionally. I have occupied various roles in the organisation since its inception. I now organise the yearly hackathons and workshops. I campaigned successfully to get Ireland into CERN, building on the momentum of previous academics advocating for the cause. I am CEO of two burgeoning non-profits. The Problem Solving Association C.L.G. is focused on improving public services through mathematics and technology, alongside the additional objective of uplifting Ireland's STEM education. Éirigh Engineering C.L.G. aims to improve Ireland's architectural landscape through the use of generative AI technologies.

  • The Problem Solving Association
    Chief Executive Officer
The Problem Solving Association Mar 2024 - Present
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
I coordinate the research and administration of many different research strands and pedagogic projects. I am supervising the development of transparent algorithms for electoral redistricting, and population density modelling so that infrastructure stresses may be anticipated and accommodated in advance rather than post-hoc. My team and I conduct research in the failures and potential exploits in political advertising, in the hopes they can be patched before being taken advantage of. I am also coordinating the creation of free mathematics resources for secondary school students, which use cutting edge animations and mathematics pedagogy research. Additionally, my team are also performing research into the risks of AI in the legal system and certain public sectors.

I'm co-founder and CEO of Éirigh, a non-profit company aimed at enriching Ireland's architectural landscape though a combination of AI in the design process, and a high-efficiency production-line methodology to dramatically cut costs. Ireland has never had the resources to engage in the kind of aestheticism other countries in history might have, plain to see in so many historical European cities. The Irish public is clearly underserved by this, as is Irish culture. While a romantic case can easily be made for pursuing gorgeous landscapes, pragmatically, however, the only way to make progress to put forward a cost-effective solution, ideally without a major enviromental impact. This is where we saw it fit to use generative AI to accelerate the design process, in combination with a high-throughout, largely automated production line. . The substrate for the mold is made of recycled wood and is itself again recyclable, and terracotta as a building material is abundant (it's just clay) and requires half the CO2 equivalent energy requirement of cement in its production. We also plan to fine-tuning the AI to will include, support, and amplify irish artists, rather than replace them.
  • Trinity College Dublin
    Phd Student
Trinity College Dublin Aug 2022 - Present
My PhD started out studying graph & group-equivariant neural networks, aiming to systematically discover new materials under the supervision of Prof. Stefano Sanvito at TCD's CRANN Institute. My studies have since altered trajectory slightly into an area known as Orbital-Free Density Functional Theory. The central question of this field has been an open problem for the last 60 years. It is high-risk, high-reward. If progress can be made here, it will revolutionise materials discovery by dramatically accelerating it.
  • Theoretical Physics Student Association
    Founder
Theoretical Physics Student Association Sep 2019 - Sep 2022
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
Driven by community spirit alone. Teaching, learning, and performance are at our core.
  • Advanced Microscopy Laboratory
    Summer Research Intern
Advanced Microscopy Laboratory May 2018 - Aug 2021
    Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland
Working over summers on a denoising algorithm with Prof. Lewys Jones.
