I am head of the academic unit Primary Care and Population Sciences at the University of Southampton. Antibiotics overuse for self limiting illness is one of the drivers for increasing antibiotic resistance- a problem of national and international significance. My major research interest is in the management of self limiting illness in primary care with a focus on antibiotic sparing strategies. I am the RCGP national clinical champion for antimicrobial stewardship and contribute to setting the agenda for addressing antimicrobial overuse in primary care. I am theme lead for the Wessex CLAHRC which will explore implementation of antimicrobial sparing strategies in primary care.End stage liver disease presents late and has increased four fold in the last 20 years mostly related to consumption of alcohol. Recognition of early liver fibrosis has the potential to enable people to cut down alcohol before the end stage of the disease. I collaborate with Dr Nick Sheron on a program of work to explore potential strategies for early detection of liver disease in primary care.Depression and distress are drivers of consultation and morbidity in primary care and antidepressant use is rising inexorably. It is unclear why prescriptions are rising nor whether this is appropriate. I am part of a group better trying to understand the relationships between depression, distress and optimal management.
