I spent three months at Allen Steam Turbines in Bedford assisting Project Engineers with the organisation of four turbine-generator orders for the UK and Pakistan. I ran a small team of Engineers in Alloa as we analysed equipment for future revenue streams. I spent six months with pump Engineers in East Kilbride where I focused on a number of servicing opportunities and assisted with the verification of new product designs.I was fortunate enough to have a three month International placement in Bangalore, India where I worked with Weir EnSci Design Engineers to analyse new designs and also with the development of cost-effective condition monitoring solutions.I then spent six months in a role away from Engineering as I was fortunate to be accepted to assist with the development of Weir’s new advanced condition monitoring equipment. This role focused on the marketing and commercialisation of a new product. I worked with senior business colleagues to understand possible opportunities relating to the optimisation of equipment performance and reliability for our customers.At this point I was fortunate to be offered the position of Steam Turbine Applications Engineer at Weir’s Allen Steam Turbines. This job consisted of assisting the engineers with a variety of tasks including:- Organising a valve schedule that could be used in the event of an irregularity within the condenser units.- Assisting engineers with the documentation and planning of the re-commisioning of the site after a statutory outage.- I assisted another Intern with an investigation into the affects of the cooling water system on the environment and evaluated the effectiveness of safe guards in place.- Helping to organise the various manuals into a digital form.- I also assisted on a variety of smaller tasks that help me get a broader knowledge of the nuclear industry and engineering in general.I enjoyed my time at EDF and learned a lot about Engineering within one of the most interesting and challenging industries. My time at EDF helped me understand how engineering is practiced within a site and furthered my knowledge going into the latter stages of my degree. Show less
