About Michael Talbot

I am passionate about the history of the Ottoman Empire, the wider Middle East, and global history, as a researcher and as a teacher. My main research has been on the practice of Ottoman diplomacy, especially Ottoman-British relations. I'm interested in the Ottomans as an empire, and have worked on Ottoman maritime law and sovereignty, and Ottoman North Africa and Ottoman Palestine. I am also increasingly interested in thinking about the Ottomans alongside and within other Asian contexts, especially through my recent work on Ottomans and Southeast Asia using Ottoman and Indonesian sources. I am a dedicated teacher and see supporting students as a core part of my role. My classes engage students in the histories of the Ottoman Empire, as well as the modern Middle East, Japan, Indonesia, and other global contexts. I have taken on key roles within the university's training and policy on personal tutoring and advising as well as safeguarding and mentoring. My historical expertise greatly informs my insights into contemporary politics in the Middle East, and I closely follow political developments across the region, with an in-depth focus on Turkey and Palestine/Israel. I have also appeared as a public historian on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 4, Netflix, and a number of other media platforms. I love working with schools to bring in Ottoman history, and am always up for visiting schools with my collection of Ottoman sources for students to handle. I also have experience speaking with school students and teachers about difficult issues in the news, especially events in Palestine/Israel.

Listed skills include Ottoman Turkish, University Teaching, Lecturing, Academic Tutoring, and 19 others.
