Materials Engineer/ Technology Analyst
Current
M.M.S.E Graduate Student.
As a graduate student at the University of Delaware I was a member of the Materials Science and Engineering department and worked primarily in the Center for Composite Materials. As a composites track student, my educational experience included a wide array of materials and processing techniques including working with fiber, short fiber, VARTM, and autoclaved composites. My research primarily involved characterization [fracture toughness] of various adhesives including toughened epoxies, methacrylates, and polyurethanes. While my educational background features mainly polymeric composite experience; I also have significant interest in metal and ceramic composite technology as well.
Materials Engineer
As a materials production engineer, I supported efforts including material certification, sourcing, and processing that involved a range of materials (various steels, aluminums, rubbers, epoxies, potting, sealants and plastics). My efforts resulted in line support to the PATRIOT, AVENGER, MRAP, and HMMWV Army programs. Additionally, I proactively earned certifications in Defense Acquisition University courses Acquisition 101, root cause analysis, and corrective actions training from in-class and online training modules.
Research Assistant
As a research assistant I worked on developing a novel freeze-casted multi-functional material from chitosan (a renewable, biologically derived polymer produced from chitin) and glass hollow microspheres. The project resulted in producing a material which was characterized to have aligned porosity, structurally stability, thermal insulated, and highly reflective (in the visible and near-IR spectrum) properties.
Materials Application Branch Co-Op
As an intern at ARL, I was responsible for characterizing the mechanical, thermo-mechanical, and material properties of various epoxy resin systems as a part of a greater effort of materials selection by design. In collaboration with senior researchers I wrote and presented my technical report (published under ARL-TR-5484 Materials Characterization of High-Temperature Epoxy Resins: SC-79 and SC-15/SC-79 Blend) at ARL’s summer student-intern symposium.
Bar Finishing Metallurgist Co-Op
As an intern at a specialty steel manufacturer, I supported production lines by troubleshooting and resolving line stoppages. Additionally, I was tasked with data-mining metrics (through the use of Data warehouse & Cognus Impromptu) to help identify inefficient production processes Operations management needed to address. This work resulted in significant costs savings by increasing production yields, reducing scrap material and rework.
Technical Services Technician
As an intern I supported the technical services division of this oil additives manufacturer. My daily duties consisted of production and characterization of experimental lubricant mixtures of oils and polymer additives for projects involved automatic transmission fluids, viscosity improvers (VI), and pour point depressants. I was responsible for quantifying product properties including viscosity, stability, and filterability.
