See http://spectrum.ieee.org/computing/hardware/how-venture-capital-thwarts-innovation• SL assisted in the spin off of InPhase Technologies from Bell Labs. InPhase was the first company to develop working storage systems using holographic technology, which has sufficient density to become a dominant archival storage medium for high value content. The company succeeded in generating a high level of interest by key customers in TV/movie industry as well as the US government surveillance community.• In recent years, SL changed its approach to focus on funding a small number of high-priority companies through all stages of development. SL is currently raising money for a new fund. Show less -

Ran company’s operations; developed and implemented a restructuring plan for returning the company to positive cashflow; worked intensively with counsel and the various creditor groups in the bankruptcy process to develop a confirmable plan to exit Chapter 11• One leading case was Erin Foods, a Burger King franchise that owned all of the BKs in New Hampshire and contiguous Massaschusetts. By shedding unnecessary corporate overheads and focusing on the core fast food business, returned the company to profitability within 60 days. Sold the assets at auction to the Burger King parent for a high multiple of cashflow versus industry norms. Investigated pension fund fraud by the owner, resulting in a criminal indictment.• A second case was Cumberland Coins, which sold U.S. silver dollars to customers at highly inflated valuations. Engaged numismatic experts who demonstrated that the silver dollars were only worth single-digit percentages of their selling price, and that customers were being defrauded. Resulted in a criminal indictment of the owner.• As Examiner, investigated situations where the Court wanted an independent opinion. In Rhode Island Jewelers’ Shipping freight forwarding case, determined within 10 days of appointment that the company’s economic problems were largely due to local freight haulers overcharging the forwarder, and that if the rates were dropped to market norms, the forwarder could return to profitability and the haulers would retain their most important customer. Within a month, a deal was agreed to by all parties, with a 100% payoff on the company’s debt. Show less
