Sourcing and commissioning a wide range of talented and successful photographers and building excellent working relationships with them all. I was the Deputy Picture Editor and regularly acting Picture Editor at The Independent On Sunday. I was jointly responsible for all the images that appear in the News, Sport, Arts, Business and Travel sections of the newspaper. I commissioned photographers domestically and internationally on a daily basis. I researched dozens of picture agencies and libraries continuously for suitable images. The news agenda was naturally incredibly diverse and fast changing offering major logistical and heavy research tasks every week. Responsibility for negotiating fees, sorting invoices, watching budgets and mark-ups were also key aspects of the job. It was a thrilling few years covering many of the biggest stories of the decade.

I established a Picture Desk completely from scratch in an environment that had been solidly text based throughout its existence. I managed a large team that supplied images & aided the design of the Teletext services that ran on a large variety of emerging technologies in the fields of Internet and Digital Television seven days a week. Daily research involved working on News, Sport and Entertainment stories and picture galleries. Budget configuring, organising rota-based working systems and managing work deadlines were also all major tasks in a 24 hour news covering operation.

Worked as Deputy Picture Editor on a Picture Desk of 5 people on both Eva & Chat Magazines. Both magazines were big selling women's weeklies focusing mainly on showbiz & real life features. I commissioned photographers on a daily basis as well as buying in images from all the top picture agencies in the UK & abroad. The booking of studios, make-up artists & stylists was also a regular duty. In the absence of the Picture Editor I became head of the desk.

Working out of ACP's London Bureau I was supplying the biggest selling women's magazines in Australia with newsworthy photos & text that had appeared in the UK media (or were about to). The position involved huge amounts of research, building up an enormous contact book & the ability to negotiate for usage rights within a variety of budgets. The competition, particularly for exclusive rights to photos was intense, speed was of the essence & negotiations & prices bid for single photos often ran into thousands of pounds.
