I studied Geography at Kingston University, but my other passion, aviation, got the better of me and after an unfulfilled ambition to be a pilot, I ended up in airport management for the whole of my working life. I became heavily involved in facilities development and planning and increasingly interested in the subject of signing and the psychology of people behaviour in unfamiliar environments. After going on and on about how this wasn't being taken seriously, a post was eventually created and as it often is when people shout loudly, I was asked to sort it out!This was a job I did for ten years from 1997, until my retirement from BAA in 2008.I joined the Sign Design Society also in 1997, becoming Chairman in 2006. Retirement from full time employment ought to release you to do that hidden range of ambitions you have in life, but I didn't complain that SDS suitably occupied most of that supposed free space! It's a great organisation, which delivers a lot for a tiny income and with a small team of unpaid professionals. After a record ten years in the post, overseeing many events and progess for the Society I stepped down in October 2016 passing the chairmanship on to my colleague, Sian Kelly who will now the organisation onto greater heights. Bon chance Sian !Specialties: Another string to my signing and wayfinding bow was involvement for over ten years in the development of International standards on wayfinding and public information symbols. I stood down from this in 2015 and for the first time ever I presently have no professional responsibities, freeing me to gorge myself on my passions for the arts, sciences and much else!
