Growing up as the son of a successful businessman, my dream was to one day work with my father and carry on in his shoes. Providing corporate service to attorneys and their clients is not offered as part of an accredited school's curriculum, so I had to forge my own path.I went to a liberal arts college, studied mathematics (which I loved) and acted in school plays (which I also loved.) After college I took the first actuary exam, and enrolled in The New Actors Workshop in NYC. Having worked summers at my father's company as a By-hand messenger, assistant office manager and part-time collection agent, I felt that joining the company full-time would be inevitable at some point, and so endeavored to delay entry as long as possible and follow my other passions in the meantime. I did not want to grow old in a job and have regrets about youthful passions lost.My career as an actor did not last long as I found that I had no stomach for being professionally unemployed. (I worked in community theater, as actor, director, producer.) Chasing down the actuary exams did not seem to fit me either (I prefer the theoretical aspects of mathematics to its practical application.) So, I took a job in a water laboratory as #1 helper. Those duties entailed collecting wastewater samples, cleaning instruments, typing reports for the EPA and DEC, invoicing, and even building a working model prototype of a proprietary, tertiary-effluent filter. After two years, I planned to take summer courses in chemistry and get my laboratory license. In May that year, my father took me to lunch and asked me if I was ready to join the firm. His office manager was leaving and he wanted me to take the position if I wanted it. If not, the offer may not be there in the future...I accepted. It was time to begin living my dream.My first week on the job he told me, "Learn everything you can about this company. Talking to clients is easy. Running a business is not." So, true.
