The lab studies how this process works in healthy individuals and how it goes awry in neurological disease, combining approaches from robotics, computational modeling, functional brain imaging, and behavioral neuroscience. My projectI initiated a project to investigate whether the nervous system uses 'motor working memory' when learning new movements. The presence of a working memory system for the transient holding and processing of new and already stored auditory and visuo-spatial sensory information is well-established. However, it is not known whether the nervous system uses motor working memory. Show less

However, pain and musculoskeletal conditions limit our capacity to do so. My PhD research investigated the effect of pain on human motor control; specifically, whether the nervous system alters motor variability during acute pain to search for a new, less painful movement strategy. A further line of research was the development of a new experimental model of sustained pain to study changes to motor control when elbow pain is sustained for one week.Other interests: Higher education and research policy; Student advocacy.
