Mike Nelson directs the Carnegie Endowment’s Technology and International Affairs Program, which works with policymakers and others to harness the potential of emerging technologies, including digital technologies, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. Prior to joining Carnegie, he started the global public policy office for Cloudflare, a startup.

Teaching and doing research on Internet technology and cyber-policy in Communication, Culture, and Technology Program. Among the courses I have taught are "How to Predict the Future(s)," "Creating a Culture of Innovation," and "What's Shaping the Internet." I also gave speeches and did consulting about the next generation of the Internet.

As Director of Internet Technology and Strategy at IBM, I managed a team helping define and implement IBM's Next Generation Internet strategy. My group worked with university researchers on NGi technology, shaped standards for the NGi, and communicated IBM's vision of NGi and the future of computing to customers, policy makers, the press, and the general.

Helped develop the Internet Society's strategy for influencing Internet policy in countries around the world.

Worked in the FCC's Office of Plans and Policy. Helped craft policies to foster electronic commerce, spur development and deployment of new technologies, and improve the reliability and security of the nation's telecommunications networks.

Worked with Vice President Gore and the President's Science Advisor on issues relating to the Global Information Infrastructure, including telecommunications policy, information technology, encryption, electronic commerce, and information policy.

Worked for the Senate's Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Space, chaired by then-Senator Gore. Lead Senate staffer for the High-Performance Computing Act.
