About Michael Nelson

John Maxwell said “The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects it to change. The leader adjusts the sails.” This is the perfect description of my career, a constant adjusting of my “sails” in order to move forward, achieve progress and exceed expectations. You will see that I am a transitioning veteran who has enjoyed a successful career in the United States Air Force. Though my career started as am aircraft maintainer, for more than 10 years I have been in a leadership role overseeing a variety of support operations. I have leveraged the knowledge I have gained as a maintainer to effectively lead aviation operations support programs. As I pursue my bachelor’s degree and study the concepts of technical project management, I have learned that planning is such a critical part of the process. The process of planning involves identifying potential obstacles or issues, identifying the most efficient allocation of resources and recognizing the required details so that you don’t miss any steps along the way. This attention to detail is where I excel, as it has been important to my success throughout my entire career. My service commitment to the Air Force will be complete 8/2019. I am seeking to leverage my unique combination of experience, education and knowledge into a successful program management or aviation support role. I can be reached at mwn21@hotmail.com to discuss any opportunities.

Listed skills include Security Clearance, Microsoft Excel, Security Management, Safety Manager, and 54 others.

Debrief / Information Program Manager

Luke Afb

I directed a 5-person support team that directly communicated with pilots, recorded their flight information, assisted with identifying and troubleshooting any issues and clarified the potential root cause of any in-flight issues. My team supported 25 instructor and student pilots during their daily flight schedule in 28 F-16 aircraft. Some of the highlights of my contributions included:➡ As the debrief program manager, I used my technical expertise as a maintainer to clarify pilot-reported aircraft issues and record them in IMDS maintenance database. Any time there was an in-flight emergency, a malfunction or technical issue of varying severity, my team and I recorded this informaiton while providing exceptional customer service to the pilots.➡ The data we collected was used to assess student pilots' effectiveness and performance. I was able to increase program effectiveness by 17% through flyig hour program analysis as well as maintaining accurate data in our Graduate Training Integration Managment System (GTIMS).➡ I gained extensive project management experience in this role. I was able to restore a tracking system that had been down for 3 months which saved 10+ hours every week by tracking data and automatically generating reports. In addition, I planned and managed a 4-month project that relocated an entire support operation to a new hangar. This project, that included 1,200 pieces of equipment, valued at $1.5M, was seamlessly completed without negatively impacting flying operations. My service commitment in this role will end 8/2019.

Oct 2017 - Sep 2019

Maintenance Production Manager

I assigned daily production priorities to a team of 64 technical professionals. We supported 52 F-16 and A-10 aircraft, valued at $2.5B and oversaw accountability of $1.5M in tools. I supervised the completion of an average of 35K+ maintenacne actions while also evaluating performance metrics such as on-time completion and quality assurance to optimize overall performance. Some of the highlights of this role included:➡ In order to achieve our produciton goals without sacrificing quality or safety, I oversaw quality, safety, supply chain and process improvement programs. By creating a comprehensive annual strategic plan, I ensured the team had the necessary supplies, parts and equipment to avoid work stoppage. We created a quality-focused culture that led to QA pass rates 11% above USAF standards while also complying with safety regulations such as OSHA and FOD prevention.➡ I used Lean Six Sigma principles to streamline and standardize the phase inspection process. We slashed the 120-hour inspection process by 17.5% by removing redundancies or ineffiencies. By returning the aircraft to service sooner, we returned $3.4M in flying hour resources annually.

Oct 2011 - Oct 2017

Maintenance Program Manager

I managted a diverse array of prorams that enabled a successful flying operation with 1,500 personnel, 138 facilities and $1.7B in support equipment. The programs I managed included the Government Purchase Card (GPC) program, the training program and the security programs. The highlights included:➡ Security Programs: I oversaw the completion of Secret and Top Secret security clearances. I used Joint Personnel Adjudication System (JPAS) and e-QIP to process security clearance investigations and oversaw completion of 10-year renewal questionnaire (SF-86) and evaluated applications for completeness to avoid processing delays. In addition, I conducted physical security assessments and managed the vault program, including generating SF-700s to protect COMSEC. Additionally, I oversaw facility maintnenace and handled any repair or maintenance work orders.➡ Training Management: All 1,500 personnel had training requirements that had to be completed annually. I monitored due dates and scheduled the on-time completion of their training. ➡ Procurement: I managed procurement support, auditing GPC purchases to ensure compliance with federal acquisition standards.

Jan 2009 - Oct 2011

Global Mobility Manager

As the focal point for all deployments, I ensured 700+ personnel and all necessary cargo (up to 80 tons) was ready for worldwide movement. I prepared status reports on all personnel and equipment, identifyng limiting factors and shortfalls, that enabled leadership to prepare their strategic plans.
