As a pharmacist, my main responsibilities were in dispensing medicines accurately to patients, and helping these patients get the most out of these medicines through counselling and education.I was also involved in the provision of primary health care through the sale of over-the-counter products (with accompanying lifestyle advice) and through the supply of certain medications such as sildenafil, nicotine replacement therapy, emergency contraception, and trimethoprim (for urinary tract infections) without a prescription.

My overarching responsibility in this role was to work in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary Infectious DIseases team to facilitate the appropriate use of antibiotics within the hospital. I coordinated Waikato DHB's first ever DHB wide audit of antibiotic prescribing, and created a system that allowed Waikato Hospital to monitor the quantity of its overall antibiotic usage through which the Infectious Diseases team were able to identify potential cost savings and areas which needed improved or amended guidelines.
