I have worked on a variety of issues concerning environment, and sustainability for more than 25 years, but my focus now lies with the use of renewable energy (relevant policies and social and economic dimensions). Much of my prior work (research, analysis, writing, and public speaking) revolved around three topic areas:1. The link between environment and employment (what is now often referred to as "green jobs"), within the larger topic of green economy and sustainable development. 2. The connections between environment/resources and conflict/security.3. Disaster trends, vulnerabilities, and resilience.Between 2007 and 2017, I worked on a variety of reports on green and decent jobs for UNEP, ILO, IRENA, ITUC, WWF Europe, and other organizations, and I have presented key findings at conferences around the world. My first foray into the issue of environment and employment came much earlier, in September 1991, when I published "Jobs in a Sustainable Economy" (Worldwatch Paper No. 104). This was at a time when the term "green jobs" had not been coined yet, and when few people thought about the subject matter at all (and some assumed there was an irreconcilable tensions between economy and environment). From October 2010 to April 2011, I carried out a research project that examined water and climate-related challenges in the Greater Himalayan region, with an eye to possible ways of avoiding conflict among the countries of the region. This entailed a literature review as well as interviews with people in Pakistan, India, and Nepal.Specialties: Inter-disciplinary, cutting-edge research, analysis, and writing; frequent public speaking; editing.Further below, I list selected publications.
