Students commit to work a minimum of 60 hours while also participating in a seminar and demonstrating mastery of learning objectives for the major. The Child In Society:” This course looks at the social position of children in today’s society. Comparisons with the past and other cultures as well as a special focus on children’s peer cultures, social problems confronting youth, and the institutions which socialize and control children.

In-depth look into the consequences of poverty and inequality as well as possible solutions to these issues.“Pop Culture:” The course introduces students to the concept and origins of popular culture and to the social theories used by academics to analyze its impact on self and culture in modern consumer societies. Topics include mass media, TV, the internet, video games, sports, leisure, fashion, celebrity, shopping, advertising, and youth culture.“Introduction to Sociology:” This course examines ideologies of culture, race & ethnicity, social class, gender, and deviance (including an in-depth look into topics on poverty, discrimination, and gender inequality).“Cultural Pluralism in the USA:” This course examines the origins of cultural pluralism in the USA and the valuing of diversity as a socio-cultural imperative. Explores voluntary and involuntary immigration, internal colonization, the implications of demographics, and the history or discrimination in the US, based on race, ethnicity, religion, and gender.
